Stroheim: Views, Hiking and Pilgrimage
Accommodation in Stroheim
Stroheim offers several specific reasons to visit: the views from Mayrhoferberg, a circular hiking trail, the pilgrimage to Landerl Chapel and the Garden of Secrets. When choosing a hotel, you can consider which of these highlights best suits your trip. Each destination offers a different focus on the landscape and local history.
Views from Mayrhoferberg
Mayrhoferberg is the highest elevation in the Eferding district. A 9 m-high observation tower stands on the mountain at an altitude of 655 m. From there, the panoramic view extends to the Alpine range of the Salzkammergut and into the MĂĽhlviertel. When a foehn wind blows and visibility is good, around 130 places can be seen from the tower. This possible number depends on the stated visibility conditions. The two elevation figures describe different things: 655 m is the altitude of the site, while 9 m is the height of the tower.
Putting hiking and views into perspective
One named walking option is the circular trail “In the Footsteps of Our Ancestors.” It is about 8 km long and takes approximately 2 hours to walk. Both figures are approximate and provide a guide to the time needed for the route.
The observation tower and the circular trail represent different ways to spend time here: one is a specific viewpoint looking out over two regions, while the other is a hike with an approximate distance and walking time. When planning, you can weigh up whether you would prefer the view from the tower or a longer walk.
Landerl Chapel and Stroheim’s history
Landerl Chapel lies 2 km southeast of Stroheim town center and offers a view of the Eferding Basin. It is associated with the annual main pilgrimage: On the afternoon of the Feast of the Ascension, a procession sets out from Stroheim parish church and makes its way to the chapel, accompanied by the local brass band, hymns and prayers. A May devotion is held there.
The construction dates also give the two religious sites different historical contexts. Stroheim church was built around 1235 by Count Johann I of Schaunberg. Landerl Chapel was built between 1901 and 1904. If you are interested in architectural history, these dates provide a point of reference for the two buildings.
Garden of Secrets
The Garden of Secrets is a 20,000 m² garden. Its views stretch across the Eferding Basin and far into the mountains. This gives the garden a different panorama from the observation tower on Mayrhoferberg and the view at Landerl Chapel: the garden looks out over the Eferding Basin and toward the mountains.
The garden has a small café with a terrace, serving coffee and homemade pastries. Check before your trip whether the café is currently open. This lets you plan a visit to the garden separately from a possible stop at the café.
