Eferding: Experience the city’s history and trails
Accommodation in Eferding
Twelve stops set the pace of the Eferdinger G’schichtnweg: it leads through and around Eferding, combining historical and fantastical content. If you enjoy discovering different storytelling themes on a walk, the trail offers a clear thematic framework. You can book a guided tour through Stadtmarketing Eferding at +43 664 22 36 878.
Trails through town and countryside
The Eferdinger Jubiläumsweg has a different focus. This circular walk has eight stops and winds through Eferding’s historic setting, starting at the old tree in the town square. While the G’schichtnweg brings together historical and fantastical content, the Jubiläumsweg is defined by its circular route and historic surroundings. The starting point in the town square provides a specific landmark to guide you.
The Donausteig stage 2_G01 Aschach–Eferding also ends in Eferding. It leads from Aschach on the Danube through the Eferding Basin to its destination. The Weg der Vielfalt is aimed at walkers and cyclists and offers interactive stops and information boards on nature, culture, history and inclusion. In 2016, the idea emerged to connect the Danube Cycle Path with Hartheim Castle and Institute, while also incorporating the beauty of the Danube floodplains, topics that shape Alkoven, and inclusion.
Parish church and castle
The Parish Church of St Hippolyt in Eferding is one of the most significant Late Gothic hall churches in Upper Austria. Construction in its present form was completed in 1505 with the addition of the double spiral staircase to the choir. The building’s design and this dated detail offer different starting points for exploring Eferding’s architectural history.
Different periods also meet at Starhemberg Castle: its north wing was once a castle belonging to the Bishops of Passau. Today, the castle houses the Princely Starhemberg Family Museum and the Eferding Town Museum. The north wing’s historic role and the castle’s present-day use as a museum offer two different perspectives on cultural history.
Orchard-Hill Country and cider culture
The Obst-Hügel-Land Nature Park is a 26 km² protected landscape in the Eferding District. In Scharten and St. Marienkirchen an der Polsenz, meadow orchards and rows of fruit trees shape the landscape. The Obst-Hügel-Land Cycle Path is another option for cyclists and is particularly suitable for e-bikes.
The Cider Museum displays historic fruit mills, presses, barrels and tools used in cooperage. At the end of the tour, the museum invites you to sample Samareiner cider. Guided tours with cider tasting are available in the orchard educational garden by arrangement through the Nature Park office. This means you can choose between a museum tour with a tasting and a pre-arranged guided tour of the orchard educational garden.
A swimming facility dependent on the weather
The Eferding adventure pool is open in fine weather. Bear this weather condition in mind when including the pool in your day’s plans.
