Pupping: Monastery Church, Wolfgang Trail and Monastery Garden
Accommodation in Pupping
Pupping offers a range of options for your stay: the monastery church and the Wolfgang tradition, walking and cycling routes, the monastery garden, and the GemüseLust play park on the Danube Cycle Path. You can plan your excursions around history, physical activity, or garden and leisure activities.
Monastery Church and Wolfgang Tradition
Pupping Monastery Church commemorates Saint Wolfgang, who died here in 994. Alongside his tomb in the crypt of the collegiate church of St. Emmeram in Regensburg, the site of his death was one of the first places of worship dedicated to the saint that pilgrims visited. The two places represent different connections: Pupping is associated with Wolfgang’s death, and Regensburg with his tomb.
The Franciscan monastery was founded by the Counts of Schaunberg in 1477, who also brought the Franciscans to Pupping. The monastery church was consecrated in 1490 by Auxiliary Bishop Albert of Passau. The monastery’s founding and the church’s consecration mark two different milestones in the history of the place.
The Jägerstätter Chapel in the monastery garden is another special place in Pupping. It is a popular wedding venue. If you are considering holding a wedding there, confirm its use directly.
Wolfgang Trail, Schaunburg and Cycling Route
The Wolfgang Trail passes the Pupping glider airfield and then heads into the forest in the direction of Schaunburg. The glider airfield lies at the foot of the Schaunburg ruins, once the largest castle complex in Upper Austria. If you choose a tour based on its waypoints, this route offers a clear connection between the airfield, forest and Schaunburg.
The R1.09 Eferdinger Land Loop offers a different perspective: on this route, Pupping Monastery Church is a waypoint and is associated with Saint Wolfgang. The two routes therefore have different focal points: the church on the R1.09, and the Wolfgang Trail’s course past the airfield toward the forest and Schaunburg.
A sightseeing flight can be arranged at the glider airfield. If you plan to take a flight, check before your trip whether one can be arranged for your date.
Monastery Garden and Play Park
The vegetable show garden in Pupping Monastery Garden reflects the diversity of the region. Visitors are welcome to taste the herbs in the herb spiral. The different garden areas each have their own focus: the show garden presents regional variety, while the herb spiral invites you to sample the herbs.
At the GemüseLust Brandstatt play park, you can climb inside a giant carrot and bounce on a tomato. The play park is right on the Danube Cycle Path and next to the boat landing stage. Its focus is therefore clearly different from that of the monastery garden: here, the two play activities described take center stage.
Local Character, Regional Cuisine and Getting There
Pupping is characterized by beautifully restored, typical Upper Austrian four-sided farmhouses. Local restaurants also reflect the area’s ties to agriculture, using quality products from the region. Together, the farm landscape and regional produce offer two different impressions of the local character.
Pupping can be reached by boat from Passau via the Brandstatt/Eferding landing stage in the direction of Linz. Check the timetable and whether the landing stage is operating on your planned travel date.
