Schwendt: Hiking, Local History and Hotels
Accommodation in Schwendt
When planning a trip, visitors who take hiking and mountain tours, landscapes and local history into account will find several specific points of interest in Schwendt. When looking for a hotel in Schwendt, you can first decide whether the season, tours or cultural themes should be the focus of your stay.
Hiking and landscapes in different seasons
In summer, Schwendt is a starting point for hikes and mountain tours. Numerous routes lead directly from the village centre into the Tyrolean mountains. In winter, winter walks and snowshoe hikes are possible. This gives you a choice of different seasonal activities when planning your trip.
The landscape is shaped by gentle alpine meadows and extensive forests, as well as the rugged cliffs of the Wilder Kaiser. Gentle and dramatic impressions of the landscape can be found side by side here. This perspective on the surrounding area complements the opportunities for hiking and mountain tours with a distinct way of experiencing the village.
Two circular routes take in different points of interest: the Schwendt Village Loop passes an observation cross dating from 1652. The Schwendt Kohlental Loop follows the Kohlbach stream, passes the Enzianwiese natural monument and continues as far as the Stegerbauer. While the Village Loop includes a cultural point of interest with a specified date, the Kohlental Loop connects a stream, a natural monument and a named endpoint. The routes can therefore be distinguished by the stops described along each one.
Local history and buildings
Historically, Schwendt was a small trading village on an important pass route leading down to Kössen, over the Klobenstein Pass and towards Bavaria. Mining was carried out in Schwendt and the surrounding areas in the Middle Ages; lead and iron were found there. Mining was discontinued towards the end of the 19th century. Trade along a pass route and the extraction of mineral resources thus form two distinct chapters in the village’s history.
An important cultural landmark is the parish church of St. Aegidius, with its Gothic history, valuable frescoes and Baroque artworks. Its bell tower dates from 1686, and a large mural is located above the portal. These details offer several distinct points of interest in the church’s art and architectural history.
The cultural landscape also includes the “Lederer Herrgott”, a crucifix more than three metres high dating from the 17th century. Together with the observation cross on the Village Loop, it draws attention to two different historical objects: a 17th-century crucifix and an observation cross whose year of origin is given as 1652.
Fishing, regional cuisine and information
At the Kaiserwinkl fish ponds, visitors of all ages can fish without a fishing licence. There is also a restaurant with a lakeside terrace, serving freshly caught fish and regional specialities. Fishing and dining at the restaurant are two different ways to enjoy the facilities mentioned at the fish ponds. If you are planning a visit, check the current opening hours in advance.
The Kaiserwinkl information point in Schwendt offers brochures and information about the Kaiserwinkl tourist region. This may be useful for finding your way around if, in addition to activities and sights in Schwendt, you are also looking for information about the region. The combination of seasonal tours, landscapes, local history and regional points of interest gives you a range of starting points for planning your stay.
