Nauders offers different ways to plan a stay: castle and fortress history, winter sports, and paths and activities in the mountains. If you’re looking for a hotel in Nauders, you can start by deciding which of these themes you want to shape your stay. The differences below can help you understand the area through specific experiences before comparing offers.

Getting here and winter activities

If you arrive by train, regional bus 273 connects Landeck-Zams station with the center of Nauders. From there, a free ski bus continues to the mountain lifts. Check the current timetable before travelling, as route numbers and transport services may change.

The Nauders ski area has 75 kilometers of slopes between 1,400 and 2,750 meters in altitude, as well as thirteen modern lifts; there are runs for all ability levels. Flow parks with kickers and rails, as well as numerous freeride routes, round out the offering. Since the number of slope kilometers and the lift infrastructure may change, check the latest information for your planned travel dates. The 8-kilometer toboggan run leads from the Bergkastelbahn mountain station down to the valley. It operates seasonally, so take this into account when planning.

Castle and fortress history

Naudersberg Castle was built at the beginning of the 14th century and was first mentioned in official records in 1325. The upper floors contain exhibition rooms, court offices, a castle chapel, an art gallery featuring works by Nauders artists, and exhibitions of historical objects. The specific mix of exhibitions may change, so check in advance which exhibitions are currently on display.

Nauders Fortress was built around 1840 to protect Tyrol’s southern border. Remains of the Niklas Wall, dating from the early Middle Ages, can still be seen at the fortress. High above Nauders, on the Plamortboden, many anti-tank obstacles, bunker complexes and combat positions can still be seen following extensive restoration. The sites offer different historical perspectives: the fortress focuses on border defense and the early wall, while the Plamortboden features preserved defensive structures.

Mountain trails and activities

The easy Bergkastel mountain hiking trail is a circular route with varied views below and above the tree line. The Hofrat Trail leads from the Bergkastel cable car’s mountain station at an altitude of 2,170 meters to 2,222 meters through the stone pine forest on Bergkastel. The 6-kilometer Zirm Trail begins after taking the Zirmbahn up from Bergkastel to an altitude of 2,550 meters. The route lengths and elevations provide different points of reference for your planning.

The Bike Base on the Bergkastel plateau is a beginner-friendly biking area with four trails accessible by conveyor belt. At the Goldpark Carts, visitors ride three-wheeled carts from the Bergkastel cable car’s mountain station down to the valley. Visitors can also pan for gold in Goldpark. These activities may operate seasonally, so check which ones are available during your travel dates.

The Goldwasser site is right next to the panoramic restaurant. This small water world includes a miniature landscape with huts and walkways, a pirate ship and a water wheel around a 690 m² play lake. These specific features, along with the paths and trails, give you more options to consider when planning your time in the mountains.
