Schönberg in the Stubai Valley: Culture, cycling route and themed trail
Accommodation in Schönberg in the Stubai Valley
Schönberg in the Stubai Valley lies where the Stubai Valley meets the Wipptal. The clustered village is enclosed on three sides by the Brenner motorway, which crosses the valley over the Europabrücke. The Europabrücke spans the Wipptal at a great height and is 192 metres high. The municipality’s settlement area extends from Unterberg at 800 m to Gleins at 1,400 m. Decorated farmhouses shape the village’s appearance.
The figures describe different scales of orientation: the valley crossing and motorway describe the location of the clustered village, while the elevations refer to the municipality’s settlement area. This helps distinguish Schönberg’s village character from its geographical setting.
Culture and local history
Sacred art, historic buildings and the memory of the Tyrolean freedom struggles come together in Schönberg. The Holy Sepulchre was first erected here in 1770 and is one of the most significant surviving art monuments of its kind in Tyrol. The historic installation included around 100 colourful, shimmering sepulchre globes illuminated from behind, as well as candles. During Holy Week, many visitors make a pilgrimage to the parish church to see the Holy Sepulchre. If you would like to see it yourself, check in advance whether it will be open to visitors on your chosen date.
The listed Wittingwarte observation tower was built of wood in 1890 and restored in 1994/95. Tyrolean freedom fighter Andreas Hofer set up his headquarters in Schönberg several times during the Battle of Bergisel. The Schöberlhof was once a post station; its façade features paintings. The local landmarks thus range from an art monument and a protected building to regional history and a building’s former use.
Cycling route and themed trail
Stubai Cycle Route 19 was officially opened in October 2025. The route starts in Schönberg and is signposted as far as Doadler Alm in Falbeson. It connects Schönberg with Neustift, Fulpmes, Telfes and Mieders. The average gradient is five per cent; the route is suitable for e-bikes, mountain bikes, road bikes, gravel bikes and balance bikes.
A family-friendly themed trail leads from Schönberg along the Gleinser Weg to the Alpengasthaus Gleinserhof. The 2025 Stubai hiking guide gives a walking time of about 1.5 hours and an elevation gain of 335 metres. The two options also differ in the planning information available: for the themed trail, the destination, walking time and elevation gain are highlighted, while for the cycling route, the route, average gradient and bicycle types are specified. When weighing up the activities, you can consider these details according to the kind of activity you have planned.
