Pfons: Discover cultural history and trails
Accommodation in Pfons
Pfons combines historic buildings with historic trails and specific route options. When planning your trip, you can decide whether you are more interested in architecture, regional history, mountain biking or a winter outing.
Buildings and historic traces
The branch church of St Margaret in Pfons was originally built in the Gothic style and, according to the heritage list dated 23 June 2026, is a protected monument. The Latschburg manor house in Schöfens is also listed as a protected monument. It was built around 1710. Inside is a room decorated with paintings, known as the Paradise Room.
Arnholz Castle in the district of Schöfens was first mentioned in the 13th century. Previously, or under an earlier name, it was known as Narrenholz or Nornholz Castle. It was rebuilt several times over the course of its history. The three buildings offer different historical points of reference: a church with Gothic origins, a castle first mentioned in the Middle Ages, and a manor house dating from around 1710.
The history of Matrei marble is also connected with Pfons. The stone was once quarried here and is also known as “Matrei serpentinite.” It was used to decorate the Burgtheater and the Natural History Museum in Vienna, as well as various churches in Tyrol. The former salt road to Hall in Tirol also started in Pfons and ran via Ellbögen, Patsch, Lans, Aldrans and Ampass. The history of the stone and historic routes are therefore among the town’s other cultural connections.
Trails and mountain biking
A 2025 route description by the Diocese of Innsbruck notes that the Via Laudato si' passes the BerglermĂĽhle in Pfons. Another notable route link is the 150 m suspension bridge over the Sillschlucht gorge, which connects Pfons to Matrei-Trautson Castle.
Mountain bike tour 521 starts in Matrei, runs via Pfons and the Ochsenalm to the Frontalalm, and then returns to Pfons. It is rated difficult and requires stamina and fitness. The rating may change depending on trail conditions; check them before setting off. The start and finish points are also useful for planning: Matrei is the starting point, while the route described returns to Pfons after the section via the Frontalalm.
The section near the Fritzen Alm and Frontalalm in Pfons is also popular with mountain bikers. This refers to the section in the area of the two alpine pastures; tour 521 also has its own route via Matrei, Pfons and the Ochsenalm.
Getting around in winter
In winter, a ski bus runs from Pfons to the Bergeralm Ski & Leisure Arena. Check the current winter timetable before travelling. This lets you take the seasonal connection into account when planning without assuming a specific departure time.
