In Axams, churches, chapels and linen production tell the story of historical developments; in the Axamer Lizum, mountain trails and winter sports shape the offerings.

Cultural Heritage and Local History

In 2016, Axams’s Wampelerreiten was added to Tyrol’s register of intangible cultural heritage. It is a distinctive part of local history, alongside architectural landmarks that reflect different periods and styles.

The parish church of St John the Baptist in Axams is a Rococo church. It was built between 1732 and 1734; Franz Xaver Kirchebner painted the ceiling frescoes in the late 18th century. The Chapel of St Michael is attached to the sacristy. It contains Romanesque structural elements, and its old frescoes were painted over in 1633.

The Chapel of St Wilgefortis lies below the Chapel of St Michael. It was consecrated in 1666 and attracted many pilgrims in earlier times. Northwest of the village of Axams stands the octagonal Linden Chapel of St Sebastian. It was built in 1635 in gratitude for being spared the plague.

Linen production is also part of the town’s history: until the 19th century, Axams was one of Tyrol’s main suppliers of linen, alongside the Ötztal. Axams flax was considered the finest in Tyrol.

Hiking and Mountain Scenery

The Axamer Lizum offers hiking trails amid the mountain scenery of the Kalkkögel. The Hochtennbodensteig connects the Hoadl-Haus with the Birgitzköpflhaus and runs alongside the Kalkkögel. The easy family walk to Herzlteich leads from the Hoadlbahn middle station to the pond.

Another option is the Birgitzköpfl–Götzner Alm circular hike in the Axamer Lizum hiking area. It offers scenic views and is suitable for families; along the way, you can enjoy views of the Kalkkögel, the Inn Valley and the Nordkette. Seasonal conditions can vary.

For an alpine circular tour, start at the Birgitzköpflhaus and follow the trail over the Nockspitze, at 2,403 m, to the Spitzmandl summit cross. The return route goes via the Pfriemeswand and Zwölferspitze back to the Birgitzköpflhaus. The Nockspitze mountain tour via Halsl offers 360-degree panoramic views of Innsbruck and far into the Inn Valley.

Built in 1963, the Axamer Lizum mountain chapel lies along the Axamer Lizum circular hiking trail. The Kalkkögel mountain range near Axams is also known as the “Dolomites of the North” because of its jagged peaks.

Winter Sports and Practical Information

The Hoadl cable car takes winter sports enthusiasts to the Hoadl high plateau at an altitude of 2,340 m. Ski races were held in the Axamer Lizum during the 1964 and 1976 Winter Olympics. A free ski bus runs daily at frequent intervals from Innsbruck and the surrounding towns directly to the Axamer Lizum. Check the latest timetable and ski bus operating information before setting out.

Sidewalks run along almost the entire main road through Axams; there are also numerous sidewalks on the side streets. The Axams leisure centre has been closed since 30 September 2024. Check its current status before planning a visit.
