If you are looking for a hotel in Götzens, its cultural history and outdoor activities can help you assess the destination in light of your interests. The pilgrimage church, Theresienkirchlein and Vellenberg Castle ruins each reflect different historical connections. Hikes, the mountain ride to the Muttereralm ski area and Götzens downhill trails add specific activities to these themes. When planning, take into account the different periods in the history of the churches and castle, as well as named trail sections, elevations and an approximate walking time.

Churches and castle: different historical connections

The pilgrimage church in Götzens was built between 1772 and 1775, based on plans by, or under the direction of, master builder Franz Singer. The church is the final resting place of the martyr priest Otto Neururer. Another notable feature is its excellent acoustics, which delight visitors and performers at concerts.

Vellenberg Castle once served as a district court and was also used as a prison from the 15th century onward. Only remnants of defensive walls and cellars remain of the ruins. Its former use as a court and prison contrasts with what remains today: sections of walls and cellars.

Today’s Theresienkirchlein, on the western edge of Götzens, was the village’s first church and is mentioned as early as 1350. The altar of the Theresien Chapel dates from 1676. The dates refer to different things: 1350 is the church’s earliest recorded mention, while 1676 is the date of the altar. The pilgrimage church was built much later, between 1772 and 1775.

Hiking, mountain rides and downhill biking

The hike from Götzens via Götzner Alm and Mutterer Alm to Mutters starts in the village centre at 868 m. The trail first follows a paved road to the Götzner mountain farms. Götzner Alm lies below Nockspitze at 1,542 m. From there, a forest road leads to Mutterer Alm, at an elevation of 1,608 m, in about 40 minutes.

For planning your hike, note that the figures refer to different things: 868 m is the starting point in the village centre, while 1,542 m and 1,608 m are the elevations of the two alpine pastures. The approximately 40 minutes is the estimated walking time from Götzner Alm to Mutterer Alm, not the duration of the entire hike from Götzens. Actual walking time may vary depending on conditions.

Götzens is also a starting point for the mountain ride to the Muttereralm ski area. The valley station of the Nockspitzbahn is right in Götzens and is easy to reach on foot. If you are planning to take the mountain railway, check the timetable in advance.

A clear rule applies to the Götzens downhill trails in Bikepark Innsbruck: riding is not permitted in the designated protected areas for capercaillie. Check the trail rules before setting off. The practical considerations differ by activity: for the hike, they include the starting point and the walking time for the specified section between the alpine pastures; for the mountain ride, the timetable; and for downhill biking, the designated protected areas.
