Rietz combines alpine destinations with sacred art and local traditions. At 2,884 metres above sea level, the Rietzer Grieskogel is the highest mountain in the northern Sellrain Mountains in the Stubai Alps. Angersee lake lies at around 2,237 metres, slightly above the Peter-Anich-HĂĽtte. For planning your trip, Rietz offers a variety of themes: mountains and lakes, history and churches, or cycling and culinary delights.

Mountain Scenery, Lake and Seasonal Activities

On warm days, the Rietzer Grieskogel is a popular hiking destination. In winter, experienced ski tourers can go ski touring there. Activities therefore vary by season and appeal to different interests: hiking on warm days or ski touring in winter. The themed trail in Rietz comprises several routes or educational trails in the local recreation area, adding to the range of outdoor activities.

Angersee lake is another attraction in the mountain scenery. A raft is available on the lake for a short trip. Above the lake, the Peter-Anich-HĂĽtte is located at 1,909 metres above sea level. It opened on 27 July 1884 and has belonged to the Hohe Munde section since 2025. The lake, hut and Grieskogel bring different places and elevations into your travel plans.

Churches, Museum and Living Traditions

The Rietz Village Museum displays sacred art from the parish church, the Kreuzkirche and the pilgrimage church of Saint Anthony of Padua. The collection also includes everyday objects from school life and from the farming and artisan world of Tyrol. Examples include bobbin lace-making and the processing of flax and wool. Religious art is thus presented alongside insights into earlier working and living conditions.

The Kreuzkirche was built in 1664 on the foundations of a chapel. Its construction enabled carters and travellers staying at the opposite “Regensburger” inn—now Seiser—to attend Mass. This historical connection also links the church to travel in those days. In 1676, Rietz resident Peter Grassmayr built a first small church on the Mühlegg.

The pilgrimage church of Saint Anthony is situated on a hill south of the village that is visible from far away. It was built in the Rococo style in 1757. The church is also chosen for weddings, with numerous couples from near and far opting for it. Another part of Rietz’s religious tradition is the “Bargl”: for generations, residents of Rietz have walked over it, commemorating the Passion of Jesus. Every three years, Rietz also celebrates Fasnacht.
