Chapels and Historical Traces

In spring 2020, the foundations of a Gothic village church were discovered in the area of the cemetery chapel in Roppen. The church was built around 1460; the Diocese of Innsbruck reported the discovery in 2025. The two dates refer to different historical events: the approximate time when the church was built and the later discovery of its foundations. The Lourdes Chapel was built in 1899 in the Neo-Gothic style on the site of the former Church of St. Leonard. Inside, it houses a Lourdes grotto with a statue of Our Lady.

The Bruder Klaus Chapel stands on Burschl, atop a rocky outcrop covered in vegetation that drops steeply down to the Inn. The chapel contains a depiction of the hermit dating from around 1480. Ceramic and bone finds from the Bronze Age, around 800 BC, point to early settlement on Burschl. The artwork and archaeological evidence refer to periods far apart in time: the depiction is dated to around 1480, while the finds indicate early settlement around 800 BC.

Trails Through Landscape and History

The Oberfeldwaal Roppen circular trail starts at the sports ground and follows old irrigation channels once used to water the fields. Its focus is the historic use of water in agriculture. The Roppen high-altitude trail starts right in the centre and leads through forests and across lush meadows above the village. The Forchet Geology Trail offers a way to explore the Tschirgant rockslide area between Roppen and Haiming. Each of the three trails has a different focus: historic irrigation along the Oberfeldwaal, forests and meadows on the high-altitude trail, and the geology of the rockslide area at Forchet.

The Way of St. James starts in Roppen on the left bank of the Inn. Trail conditions can vary by season, so check them before setting out on a stage. The Römerbadl, a Kneipp facility at the foot of the 2,370-metre-high Tschirgant, lies directly on the Way of St. James in Roppen. For pilgrims and hikers, the Römerbadl is a popular, refreshing stop along the way. The starting point on the left bank of the Inn and the facility as a named stop give you two specific landmarks for planning this part of your trip.

Cycle Path, High-Altitude Trail and Rafting

The Forchheimer Trail also starts in Roppen and leads via the Maisalm to the Erlanger Hut. The Inn Valley Cycle Path includes a section between Roppen and Haiming. The named points along the routes make the difference between them clear: the Forchheimer Trail passes the Maisalm and the Erlanger Hut, while the cycle path has a section between the two villages. Rafting through the Roppener Gorge is another sporting activity associated with Roppen and its surroundings. The activities described range from hiking and cycling to an adventure on the water.
