Oetz: Local History, Art and Hochoetz
Accommodation in Oetz
The village offers several ways to explore: its historic centre, the Oetz Tower Museum, the “Legends of Oetz” discovery trail and the Acherkogelbahn cable car, which connects to Hochoetz. You can plan your visit around whether you would like to focus more on local culture or include an excursion into the hiking and alpine pasture area.
Historic Centre and Architecture
The historic centre of Oetz is home to painted houses dating from the 16th century. Numerous other historic buildings have also been preserved, with authentic architectural features that bear witness to village life and work in earlier times. You can focus on individual buildings as well as on the architectural traces of everyday life. The parish church of St. George and St. Nicholas is Late Gothic and was later extended in the Baroque style. Its history of construction therefore brings together two periods. The St. George Fountain is also part of the historic centre. The facades of the Gasthof Stern and Posthotel Kassl are painted with intricate designs. These features offer different points of interest if you are interested in the architecture and history of the village.
The Tower Museum and Stories from Oetz
The Oetz Tower Museum is housed in a building that served as the residence of a landed noble family in the Middle Ages; it opened as a museum in 2004. Visitors can see changing selections from Hans Jäger’s art collection, which comprises nearly 5,000 objects. The art on display ranges from medieval religious art to Alpine landscape painting and sculpture, as well as contemporary art and photography. This brings together different periods and genres. The museum is about a ten-minute walk from the “Oetz – Gemeindeamt” bus stop; walking time may vary depending on the route and conditions.
The “Legends of Oetz” discovery trail offers another way to explore local history. Its stops take you past historic merchant houses and mysterious markings on fountain columns, telling stories about how the village was shaped. While the museum displays different kinds of artwork, the trail focuses on local houses and markings. You can choose between an art-focused museum visit and exploring the village’s traditional stories.
River, Surroundings and Hochoetz
The Ă–tztaler Ache flows through Oetz. Nearby are Lake Piburg and the rockslide forest surrounding it; the area has been a nature reserve since 1929. These are two distinct geographical points of interest: the river in the village and the protected lake and forest area nearby.
The Acherkogelbahn’s eight-seater panoramic gondola travels directly from its valley station in Oetz to the Hochoetz hiking and alpine pasture area. The connection to this area therefore starts right in the village, while the historic sights are attractions in their own right within Oetz. Check the cable car’s current operating hours when planning a specific excursion.
