Discover Igls: Culture, Nature and Winter
Accommodation in Igls
Igls can be explored through a range of interests: Goldbichl and Heiligwasser offer insights into historical topics, while the museum in the Haus des Gastes combines archaeological finds with local customs and winter sports. Nature lovers can enjoy the distinctive landscape of the Zirbenweg trail, while the Patscherkofel ski area offers various activities in winter. In summer, church concerts and activities related to equestrian sports add to the options. Which aspects matter most to you also depends on when you travel.
Culture and History
About 4,000 years ago, Goldbichl was a powerful sanctuary of significance beyond the region. Illustrated information boards along the archaeological trail explain aspects of daily life and religious rites. The trail focuses both on the sanctuary’s historical significance and on everyday life and religious practices.
A small museum is located on the first floor of the Haus des Gastes in Igls. Its exhibits include finds from the Goldbichl burnt-offering site, several display cases containing Bronze Age and Iron Age metal and ceramic artefacts, a nativity scene with hand-carved figures, traditional Huttler costumes and masks, and a winter sports exhibition. The collection brings together archaeological themes, nativity art, local customs and winter sports, offering a range of cultural perspectives.
The Heiligwasser pilgrimage church was built in 1661. It is located in the forest, roughly halfway up Patscherkofel, and is a popular destination for excursions. In historical terms, the span therefore extends from the sanctuary at Goldbichl, dating back about 4,000 years, to the church built in 1661.
The Zirbenweg Landscape
The Zirbenweg trail runs along the tree line at an elevation of over 2,000 metres, through a dense stand of Swiss stone pines that is hundreds of years old. Views of the Inn Valley accompany you along the entire trail. The elevation, the stone pine forest and the uninterrupted views of the Inn Valley come together here to create a distinctive landscape experience, setting it apart from the cultural themes of the town.
Winter and Summer Activities
The Patscherkofel ski area has a large beginner area, several practice slopes and a children’s area. It also has signposted ski touring routes and a panoramic snowshoe trail. There are practice areas and a children’s area on the one hand, and ski touring or snowshoeing options on the other; this distinction can help you narrow down the kind of winter activity you’re looking for.
During the summer months, church concerts are held in Igls parish church; individual dates may vary. If a concert is important to your travel plans, check the specific dates in advance. In summer, you can also visit a modern equestrian centre or go riding in the picturesque Mittelgebirge region around Igls/Vill. Seasonal activities therefore range from a cultural event to activities related to equestrian sports.
