Discover Passail: mining history and nature
Accommodation in Passail
Passail offers plenty of reasons to explore the area: mining history, trails through a varied landscape, activities at the leisure lake, and tours focusing on regional products. If you are looking for a hotel in Passail, the focus you want for your stay can help you choose your destination. The attractions each have their own appeal, from a route through a mountain to a hike to a river’s source.
Mining history and historic buildings
The show mine and educational tunnel in Arzberg is the only silver ore mine in the Graz Mountains that can still be entered. In the Middle Ages, silver from Arzberg was used to supply the Graz Mint. A guided tour of the Arzberg show mine follows a 550-metre route through the mountain and offers an insight into the hard working conditions of the miners.
The mining trail offers a different perspective on mining. It runs through the former mining area around Arzberg, near Passail, in the Almenland Nature Park. Part of the trail is designed as a family walking route, with dedicated child-friendly stops. While the guided tour of the show mine takes you through the mountain, the educational trail runs through the former mining area.
Historic buildings also have their own stories: Stubegg Castle was built in the 14th century. Lindenberg Church was built in the 16th century in the late Gothic style. So, in Passail, alongside mining history, you can explore different periods of construction and an architectural style.
Trails, pastures and nature
Hohenauer Ochsenhalt is a 125-hectare pasture at the foot of Sommeralm. Its diverse plant life includes native orchids. Hiking trail no. 706 leads to Hohenauer Ochsenhalt. The Raab Source Loop offers a different kind of route: this family-themed trail runs from the WaldmĂĽhle at the head of the valley to the source of the Raab. The destinations are clearly distinct: a pasture at the foot of Sommeralm on the one route, and the source of the Raab on the other.
The Raab Gorge Natura 2000 site also includes the municipality of Passail. Together with the mining trail in Almenland Nature Park and the plant life of Hohenauer Ochsenhalt, it shows that nature and landscape feature in different ways among the local attractions.
Leisure lake and golf
Passail Leisure Lake features a water play park, a diving platform, a water slide, a sandy beach and a raft. This named attraction offers several different water-play and bathing features in one place. Which of these facilities appeals most for your stay depends on whether you are more interested in water play, slides or the sandy beach.
Almenland Golf Course is an 18-hole course between Passail and Fladnitz/Teichalm. Its course programme includes lessons for beginners, advanced players, children and teenagers, as well as a golf school. If golf is one of your travel interests, you can take this information into account when planning your outings.
Tours and regional products
At Almenland Stollenkäse, the experience takes you into the Franz-Leopold tunnel, a former silver mine. The guided tour focuses on cheesemaking and cheese maturation. Afterwards, selected cheeses are sampled in the mine building, combining production with a tasting.
On tours at Almenland Imkerei Kreiner, you can learn about the lives of bees and the production of honey products. The tours include tastings of different types of honey and honey praline chocolates. Schroeder's herb workshop offers guided tours of the garden. During the tours, you can smell and taste herbs; homemade juices are also available. Workshops and seminars can be held here or run by the Schroeder family. If you are planning one of these tours, confirm the tour arrangements again before your trip.
