Fischbach is situated at an elevation of 1,050 m on a wide saddle connecting the Fischbach Forest with the Teufelstein massif. For travellers looking for a hotel for a stay focused on hiking and nature, the local activities provide a clear framework: a well-marked network of hiking trails spanning around 60 km is complemented by mountain biking tours, a cross-country ski trail and cultural attractions. The routes vary in length and stated difficulty, so when planning your trip you can first decide whether hiking, cycling, cross-country skiing or visiting the town should be the main focus.

Fischbach between the Forest and Teufelstein

Teufelstein is Fischbach’s local mountain and lies at an elevation of 1,498 m. From there, you can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding region. At the summit are three large, stacked boulders, about 6 m high. This destination therefore combines scenic views with a striking rock formation. The town’s landscape also has its own distinctive features: orchards and trees, paths lined with ash trees, village lime trees and farm gardens all contribute to its local character.

Hiking: Teufelstein Circuit and Märchenwiese

The hiking trail network spans around 60 km and is well marked. One specific route is the moderately difficult Teufelstein Circuit. It follows the well-known Mariazell pilgrimage route to Teufelstein, a sacred site in Styria. The hike to Märchenwiese is rated as easy and can be extended with a route via Reithkogel. This gives you a choice of routes with different stated difficulty levels; an extension is also explicitly possible for the hike to Märchenwiese.

Mountain Biking and Cross-Country Skiing

Two moderately difficult mountain biking routes starting in Fischbach are described. The Fischbacher Alpen Tour is 25 km long and starts in Fischbach or Sankt Kathrein am Hauenstein. The Fisch-Biker Tour is 21 km long and starts in Fischbach. The stated route lengths differ by 4 km; two possible starting points are listed for the longer tour, while the shorter one starts in Fischbach. These details offer a clear comparison by length and starting point.

In winter, the moderately difficult, snow-reliable Teufelstein cross-country ski trail adds to the range of activities. It is 4.6 km long and forms a loop around Teufelstein between Fischbach and Zellerkreuz. This means that, alongside the hiking routes, trip planning can include a designated cross-country ski trail and two mountain biking tours of different lengths.

Chapel, Parish Church and Herb Farm

The Ägydius Chapel below the village was completed in 1777. The parish church of St. Ägydius also has a historical feature: the oldest bell in its tower is said to have been cast in 1272.

Another activity takes you to Veronika’s Herb Farm in Fischbach. Guided tours of the herb fields last about an hour and a half and must be arranged by phone. The tour ends with a tasting of the products; a herb workshop is also offered. As well as outdoor tours, the range of excursions therefore includes a guided visit focused on herbs.

Hike at the Winter Solstice

The traditional winter solstice hike takes place every year at Teufelstein on the Sunday before Christmas Eve. The date given for 2026 is December 20. If you are planning your December trip around this recurring event, please check the date again before your visit.
