Anger: History, Churches and Trails
Accommodation in Anger
Anger offers a range of starting points for planning a stay: historic building phases, insights into earlier ways of life, trails with named destinations, and opportunities for swimming and tastings. You can choose different focuses rather than reducing the town’s history to a single topic. Some activities have specific conditions: archaeological sites and underground facilities in the area around Anger can be visited by prior arrangement; tastings should be arranged before you arrive.
Historic Houses and Churches
The Rauchstubenhaus is more than 300 years old and offers insights into the way of life and culture of early mountain farmers and craftspeople. More than 300 exhibits explore life in earlier times. The house was first mentioned in records in 1440 as a Hube in Erleschachen. Here, an early written reference meets an exploration of everyday life in the past.
Several historic building phases can be distinguished at the parish church of St. Andrew in Anger. Its oldest part was built around 1161 as a Romanesque chancel-tower church and was decorated with frescoes in the 14th century. The parish church was built later, from 1708 to 1711, under master builder Lorenz Stattaler from St. Ruprecht an der Raab. The dates therefore mark different stages: the oldest part of the church, its fresco decoration, and the later construction.
The Church of the Fourteen Holy Helpers in Anger has a different religious significance: it is the most important pilgrimage church in the upper Feistritz Valley. By contrast, the building itself is the focus of the “Mystical Underworld and Upper Worlds” Museum: it is housed in the Steinpaißhaus, which dates from the 13th century. Both offer a different perspective from the building phases of St. Andrew’s.
Archaeological sites and underground facilities in the area around Anger can be visited by prior arrangement. If you would like to include them in your plans, advance arrangements are part of the visit.
Trails and Destinations Around Anger
The Waldromantik circular trail starts at the Anger swimming pool, Anger’s central hiking starting point. It continues to the district of Brand, from where there are views of Anger. The trail description thus identifies both a starting point and a destination, as well as a viewpoint along the way. Check the latest trail information before setting out, as details may change.
The adventure trail to the Rauchstubenhaus leads from Anger to the Rauchstubenhaus local history museum and the Almer Inn in Edelschachen. It is designed as a challenging hike. Unlike the Waldromantik circular trail, whose named points of reference are Brand and the view of Anger, this trail features the Rauchstubenhaus and the Almer Inn. Check the latest route information before setting out on this trail, too.
Facilities at the Anger outdoor swimming pool include a sports pool, a children’s pool, a baby pool, and a beach volleyball court. There is a children’s playground in the park in front of the swimming pool, which is also accessible outside the pool’s opening hours. Information about the facilities and access may change; check the latest notices before your visit.
Regional Connections and Tastings
Anger is one of the municipalities along the Styrian Apple Road. The Schloffer organic farm offers tastings of organic products such as juice, Frizzante, and schnapps. Arrange tasting options before you arrive. This lets you include this culinary experience in your plans without linking it to a specific trail or one of the churches mentioned.
