The Zillertal Arena stretches from Zell im Zillertal via Gerlos to Wald-Königsleiten and Krimml-Hochkrimml. This makes Königsleiten part of a ski area that spans several places. In addition to skiing, hiking trails, cultural stops and cycling tours are available for planning your trip.

Skiing and activities on the mountain

The Zillertal Arena offers 150 kilometres of pistes and 52 lift facilities; skiing is possible up to an altitude of 2,500 metres. These figures describe different aspects: the piste kilometres indicate the size of the area, the number of lift facilities describes its mountain transport infrastructure, and the altitude indicates how high you can ski. Together, the size and elevation give an idea of the area’s main features.

The Dorfbahn Königsleiten gondola takes you directly from Königsleiten to the mountain station at an altitude of 2,200 metres. From there, you can access numerous hiking trails and idyllic mountain huts, and enjoy views of the Zillertal Alps and the Hohe Tauern. The mountain station is also the starting point for the family hike to the Königsleitenspitze, which leads to the 2,315-metre summit.

Other activities offer different highlights. The Königsleiten electric trial park is located at an altitude of 1,600 metres and has two courses that differ in difficulty and length. In Gipfelwelt Königsleiten, by Lake Kröndlwurmsee, there is a nature playground with a wooden marble run. This means there are activities with a range of focuses in addition to the ski area.

Hiking trails and mountain scenery

The trails vary in their destinations and scenery. The route to the Königsleitenspitze starts at the Dorfbahn mountain station and leads to the summit. The Planetary Hiking Trail runs through forests, raised bogs and alpine meadows; along the way, you can enjoy views of Ice Age formations in Hohe Tauern National Park. So the trail is shaped not only by a summit destination, but also by a variety of landscapes.

The Königsleiten–Hochkrimml/Filzstein route is recommended for a winter hike. It offers panoramic views of the Zillertal Alps, the grassy mountains and the Hohe Tauern. Wald and Königsleiten lie between the Pinzgau grassy mountains to the north and the mountain ranges of the Hohe Tauern to the south. This contrast between mountain regions places the panoramic views within a wider landscape.

Culture and special stops

The Yodelling Trail starts at the Dorfbahn Königsleiten mountain station. Its first stop is beside the Gipfeltreffen restaurant. At the interactive stations, visitors can learn traditional yodels to sing along with, using an audio station. The trail thus combines hiking with a hands-on introduction to yodelling.

Another cultural destination is the Christ the King Chapel, the village church of Königsleiten. Built in 1989 on a slight rise in the centre of the village, it is dedicated to Christ the King and depicts Christ the Redeemer as a floating figure. The Yodelling Trail and the chapel offer different experiences: one features an interactive station, while the other is distinguished by its religious dedication and depiction.

Cycling tours and connections

Two different cycling routes are described. One goes via the Gerlos Alpine Road to Krimml and returns to Wald via the Tauern Cycle Path. Another reaches the holiday village of Königsleiten, at an altitude of 1,600 metres, after approximately seven kilometres from the centre of Wald. You can choose between a tour with Königsleiten as its destination and a route that returns to Wald via Krimml; the approximate distance is given for the second tour.

Hiking buses run between Wald, Krimml, Hochkrimml and Königsleiten, as well as into the Zillertal. If you are planning to travel between these places, check the timetable for your chosen day. The Dorfbahn timetable may also be useful when planning your day. These connections can be taken into account when choosing activities without being tied to any particular tour or route.
