Discover Sulzau: Waterfall, Hiking Trails and Mining History
Accommodation in Sulzau
For a stay in Sulzau, you can plan around nature, hiking or mining history as separate themes. At the Untersulzbach Waterfall, the focus is on a circular hike with a clearly stated distance and approximate duration. The “A Glimpse into the Tauern Window” geology trail combines views of the landscape with topics in geology and mining; the Sulzau Circular Trail offers a wintertime alternative.
Waterfall and Geology Trail
The circular trail to the Untersulzbach Waterfall is 2.1 kilometres long and takes about one hour. This approximate duration can help you plan your day; check before your visit whether the trail is accessible in the current season. At the entrance to the Untersulzbachtal, the waterfall is designated a natural monument. The waterfall gorge is about 80 metres deep. A circular trail with several viewing platforms leads through the gorge. The roughly 80 metres refer to the depth of the gorge, while 2.1 kilometres is the length of the circular trail; the figures therefore describe different measurements.
The “A Glimpse into the Tauern Window” geology trail starts at the Schütthof inn in the Sulzau district of Neukirchen and follows the Untersulzbach Waterfall natural monument to the historic Hochfeld National Park Show Mine. Several information boards explain the geology of the Hohe Tauern and the development of mining in the Untersulzbachtal. Compared with the waterfall loop, this route also takes in geological connections and a historic destination.
Mining History at Hochfeld
The miners’ house beside the entrance to the Hieronymus-Erbstollen adit serves as an information point and the starting point for guided tours of the Hochfeld Show Mine. The show mine vividly conveys the harsh working conditions and mining methods of past mining eras. A transfer to the show mine can be arranged by telephone registration the day before. When booking, also ask whether this is currently possible.
Hiking Trails with Different Themes
The Schütthof inn is the shared starting point for the geology trail, the circular trail to the waterfall and the “Alpine Pastures in the Untersulzbachtal” hike. The Sulzau Circular Trail is another option, with a distinctly wintry feel: it leads through snow-covered Sulzau and along the Untersulzbach stream to the Schütthof inn. The route offers peaceful winter moments with views of the forest, water and surrounding mountains. This means that trails themed around geology, landscapes or mining history sit alongside a route whose description focuses on the winter surroundings.
Chapel Trail through Neukirchen
The Chapel Trail offers a cultural focus, too. This circular hiking trail leads through and around Neukirchen am Großvenediger, through Dürnbachau, Rosental and Sulzau, and past several historic chapels. The Siggen Chapel in Sulzau is protected as a historic monument by ordinance. The selection therefore includes, alongside nature and mining themes, a trail connecting historic chapels in several districts.
