Stuhlfelden lies between the Hohe Tauern and the Kitzbühel Alps. Situated at the foot of the 2,363 m-high Gaisstein, the village has a distinctive landscape setting; the summit is considered the highest of the Pinzgau grass mountains. There are several starting points for planning your trip: hiking destinations, seasonal leisure activities, archery and cultural history. First consider whether the mountain scenery, a particular activity or historical connections are important to your stay.

Hiking and mountain scenery

The listed forest chapel is a destination for less experienced hikers and offers views over Stuhlfelden. Seasonal trail conditions can vary, so take them into account when planning your hike. The chapel thus combines protected status with a clearly identified hiking destination. Stuhlfelden’s location at the foot of Gaisstein and between two mountain regions adds a clear geographical context to this excursion.

Seasonal leisure activities

The heated leisure pool is an outdoor pool with a 200 m² swimming pool and a 300 m² activity pool. The latter is therefore 100 m² larger. Despite being heated, it operates seasonally, so do not assume that the pool is open year-round.

The Platzhausleitn ski arena is located right in the center of Stuhlfelden. Its stated features include snowmaking facilities and a small lift for first attempts at skiing. Operating times and snow conditions depend on the season. If skiing is the reason for your trip, check the current times and conditions before your visit. The outdoor pool and ski arena thus offer different seasonal activities.

Archery also offers specific points to consider when planning. The Scheibelberg archery course, with 28 targets, is on the shady side of the Salzach Valley in the municipality of Stuhlfelden and is open from April to October. Check these seasonal opening dates locally before planning your trip around them. A free archery practice area can be used at any time; equipment is not rented on site. Take the lack of equipment rental into account when preparing.

Culture and history

Lichtenau Castle is a listed building, located a few meters east of the pilgrimage church of the Assumption of Mary, and is also used for cultural purposes. The municipal chronicle names the Rosenberg brothers as its builders and dates its construction to 1503–1506; this historical information is subject to an archival caveat. The named builders and period provide a specific historical connection, while the castle’s cultural function describes another aspect of the site.

Getting there and other points of interest

Stuhlfelden can be reached by regional train from Zell am See, which is served by international trains. As schedules and services can change, check the current connection for your travel date. The Hohe Tauern National Park golf course is another regional point of interest: it is partly located within the municipality of Stuhlfelden.
