If you are looking for a hotel in Untertauern, specific interests in nature and activities can help shape your travel plans. At the Untertauern leisure and wildlife park, animal watching and a family trail take center stage. At the Gnadenalm, between Untertauern and Obertauern, offerings include hiking and circular trails as well as themed stations; there is also the Johannes Waterfall, cross-country skiing and biathlon. This lets you plan your trip around different interests: wildlife, alpine pasture history, waterfalls and winter sports.

Wildlife Park and Water Activities

At the Untertauern leisure and wildlife park, you can see native wildlife and other animal species up close. A family trail leads through the Taurach Gorge. The park also offers a natural swimming lake and fishing at the FĂĽrstenbrunn ponds. The park brings together a range of interests: wildlife watching, a trail through the gorge and activities on the water.

Hiking and Alpine Pasture History

The Gnadenalm offers numerous hiking trails and circular walks. The child-friendly “Alles Alm” circular trail starts right at the Gnadenalm, between Untertauern and Obertauern. It is suitable for strollers, is about 5 kilometers long and has a total elevation gain of 50 meters. Ten themed stations cover life at the Gnadenalm in the past, nature and the animals found there. The trail’s specific distance and themes related to alpine pasture life are thus combined with a connection to nature.

Another family-friendly hike starts at the Gnadenbrücke in Untertauern and leads to the crystal-clear Tauernkarsee lake after 3.8 kilometers. Compared with the approximately 5-kilometer-long “Alles Alm,” this route is shorter; the two trails also differ in that “Alles Alm” is suitable for strollers. A forest track also leads from the Gnadenbrücke through woodland and alpine pastureland.

Another route leads from Untertauern, or from the junction by the wildlife park, along the old “Römerstraße” and the newly built “Hohlwandweg” to the “Maierl-Alm.” For a glimpse of traditional alpine farming, the Tauernkaralm is a destination in its own right: it is one of the last original alpine pastures with a traditional smoke kitchen and welcomes visitors to stop for a meal.

The Johannes Waterfall

The Johannes Waterfall is around 60 meters high and can be reached via both the Felseralm and the Gnadenalm. A hiking trail passes directly behind the waterfall, offering a special perspective on the water. Its height, access routes and trail layout make the waterfall a natural attraction with several options to consider when planning a tour.

Winter and Cycling Route

In winter, cross-country skiing takes center stage at the Gnadenalm: it is a cross-country skiing destination and biathlon center with guaranteed snow conditions. This focus differs from the hiking and circular trails that are also found at the Gnadenalm.

For a cycling route, the Taurachtal cycle path between Radstadt and Untertauern is another option. It is 11 kilometers long. The route complements the hiking trails with a dedicated route linking two named endpoints. Depending on whether you want to combine your stay with wildlife watching, hiking, the waterfall, winter sports or a bike tour, the destinations offer different highlights.
