Several topics are available to help you plan your trip: hikes in the Blühnbach Valley, St. Barbara's branch church in Tenneck and the history of the Windbichl farm estate. If you are looking for a hotel for a hiking-focused stay, the named starting points and types of trails can help you find your way. For a cultural and historical focus, Windbichl's chronology offers a different perspective.

Blühnbach Valley: landscape and hiking routes

Near Tenneck, close to Werfen, the Blühnbach Valley branches off from the Salzach Valley. It stretches for about 10 kilometres as a separating gorge between the Hochkönig massif and the Hagengebirge. The landscape is therefore defined by its origin and its location between the two mountain groups. The Blühnbach Valley is freely accessible to hikers and walkers.

The hike “Through the Blühnbach Valley – in the footsteps of the heir to the throne” begins opposite the Tenneck ironworks and heads west into the valley along Blühnbachstraße. It follows Obere Blühnbachstraße past old farmsteads and buildings to just before Blühnbach Castle. The starting point and route give you two specific landmarks for this tour: the start opposite the ironworks and the historic buildings along the route described.

Alternatively, you can hike around the Blühnbach Valley on a circular route along the upper and lower paths beside the Blühnbach stream. This lets you choose between a loop along both valley paths and the named hike, which heads west into the valley. Before setting off, check current trail conditions and any local restrictions.

St. Barbara's branch church and the Church Hiking Trail

St. Barbara's branch church in Tenneck is a listed building and was built in 1953–1954. The Innerbirg Church Hiking Trail also starts there and leads to Werfen parish church. The church is therefore both a protected building with its own history and a clearly defined starting point. The trail has a named destination, Werfen parish church, distinguishing it from the hikes into the Blühnbach Valley.

The Church Hiking Trail's starting point at the branch church can be reached by train, bus or car; there is a car park opposite the Tenneck waterworks. Tenneck can be reached by bus, train or car for the hike through the Blühnbach Valley. When planning your journey, it is therefore useful to distinguish between the reference points for the two tours: for the church trail, the starting point is St. Barbara's; for the valley hike, it is Tenneck. Check the relevant timetables before travelling.

Windbichl: historical development

The Windbichl farm estate is documented from the end of the 13th century. In 1614, Windbichl became a freehold estate; subsequently, district judge Josef Niggl had the present-day manor built for himself. These are separate milestones in its history: the estate's early history was followed by its change of status, and then the manor was built. Unlike the building history of St. Barbara's branch church, whose construction dates to 1953–1954, Windbichl's development is traced through this longer sequence.
