When planning your trip, it helps to distinguish between the different types of experiences: at Hornspitz, the mountain railway and hiking trails take centre stage, while Bruno’s Mountain World combines play stations with a garden and views. The Ghost Forest offers a ghost hunt, forest marble runs and a winter snowshoe hike for children. Russbach Water Park and the Fossil Cabinet each have their own focus. You can first choose by activity and theme, then plan your stay in Schattau accordingly.

Mountain Railway and Hiking Trails at Hornspitz

The Russbach Hornbahn takes visitors to Hornspitz, at an altitude of 1,450 m, where numerous hiking trails begin. This combination of a mountain railway and the start of hiking trails gives you a practical point of reference for planning your day. The Russbach Ski School office is located at the valley station of the Russbach Hornbahn (gondola lift), Schattau 90, 5442 Russbach. If the ski school is part of your plans, you can use this address as a guide.

Play and Nature in Bruno’s Mountain World

Bruno’s Mountain World offers a puzzle rally and numerous play stations featuring Bruno and his friends. It also includes an alpine flower garden and the Steinbock Arena, which offers views of the Dachstein. Each element has a different focus: the puzzles and play stations provide a playful experience, the garden showcases alpine flowers, and the arena offers views. If you’re planning your day around a particular interest, you can give each theme its own priority.

Stations and a Winter Activity in the Ghost Forest

The ghost hunt in the Ghost Forest leads through ten different stations. There are also forest marble runs. In winter, the snowshoe hike for children is a separate activity, featuring wooden figures, little puzzles and play stations. The number of stations characterises the ghost hunt, while the winter hike includes figures and small tasks. The forest marble runs add another type of play to the selection. The activities therefore differ in their format, and the children’s snowshoe hike also has an explicitly winter-themed character.

Water and Fossils

Russbach Water Park is located at Schattau 100, 5442 Russbach am Pass Gschütt. It features a waterfall and places where visitors can jump into the water. These features offer something different from mountain hiking trails or stations in the forest: the waterfall and jumping spots are practical points of reference if water-based experiences are a priority when choosing an outing.

The Fossil Cabinet displays a one-metre giant ammonite from Pass Gschütt. The exhibit is a cast of the original in the Natural History Museum in Vienna. Pass Gschütt identifies the giant ammonite’s place of origin; the original is held at the Vienna museum, and a cast of it is displayed in the cabinet. Here, the focus is on a single fossil whose size and origin are clearly identified—a different focus from the mountain railway, play stations or water park.
