Sankt Koloman combines a protected moorland landscape with hiking trails and cultural attractions. Seewaldsee, trails on the Trattberg and destinations such as Wilhelmskapelle offer different ways to plan your trip—from observing nature to exploring regional history.

Landscape and Trails Around Seewaldsee

The Seewaldsee Landscape Conservation Area lies in Sankt Koloman and Scheffau and covers 143.7 hectares. Seewaldsee is a moor lake within the protected area. Quiet forests and gentle moor meadows define its surroundings, which are rich in flora and fauna. On the right-hand side of the circular trail, a well-maintained forest road runs through the area and is suitable for families with strollers and wheelchair users.

The Trattberg Panoramic Road runs between the center of Sankt Koloman and the Wegscheid district, leading to the paid parking lot at Seewaldsee. The drive takes about 15 minutes. Check access information before setting out. The road also leads into an alpine pasture area with gentle slopes, rustic huts and sweeping views.

The hiking trails on Trattberg range from leisurely walks across alpine pastures to scenic circular routes over broad ridges. If you would like to get your bearings in advance, the Sankt Koloman hiking map includes routes, hiking tips, elevation profiles and places to stop for refreshments. This lets you compare the route information with your own plans for the day.

Hiking, Cave Visits and Cycling

The Taugler dialect Stations of the Cross is a 3.4-kilometer panoramic circular trail with five chapels. Another signposted hike leads through quiet woodland to Wilhelmskapelle. The Leonhardsweg is also useful for orientation: it runs from Salzburg to Tamsweg, passing through Sankt Koloman.

The Feuchter Keller show cave can be visited on guided tours at weekends between June and October. The tour takes about two hours and includes some easy climbing; it is suitable for children and adults. Check the tour conditions before your visit.

Mountain bike tours also follow specific routes. One starts in Sankt Koloman and follows the paved Trattberg Panoramic Road, passing the EnzianhĂĽtte to the viewing platform and continuing to Hintertrattberg. Another runs via Tauglboden and the paved road to Grundbichlalm, then continues along forest roads to the mountain pastures. The challenging loop around the Osterhorn Group is 52 kilometers long, climbs 2,500 meters and passes Seewaldsee. Distance, elevation gain and route provide different points of reference when choosing a tour.

Chapels, Museum and History

Wilhelmskapelle stands at the foot of the Wilhelmswand and is considered one of Salzburg’s oldest sacred buildings. According to the Salzburg monuments list dated June 23, 2026, it is protected as a historic monument by ordinance. You can combine a visit with the signposted hike through the woodland.

The Sankt Koloman Local History Museum offers insights into everyday life in the region through its displays of farming equipment, school supplies, rocks and models. The Alte Branterer-Mühle is a historic building and offers a glimpse into traditional milling technology and the local economy. The glacial polish is considered Europe’s largest exposed glacial polish and is designated a natural monument. Together, these sites offer different ways to explore local and natural history.

Winter Activities and Regional Cuisine

Sankt Koloman has two well-groomed cross-country ski trails for both classic and skating techniques. Check winter conditions and trail grooming before you travel. Two ice-stock rinks can be rented for an afternoon or evening; check seasonal availability and reservation details again before your trip.

In the town center, Tauglerei serves internationally inspired dishes with regional influences. Around Sankt Koloman, the Taugler alpine huts offer fresh dairy products, freshly baked bread and homemade regional specialties. Places to eat and local products complement the range of hiking, cultural and nature experiences available during your stay.
