Golling an der Salzach: Culture, History and Nature
Accommodation in Golling an der Salzach
When planning a hotel stay in Golling an der Salzach, cultural history, events and nature experiences can be considered as different areas of focus. Consider whether you would prefer to plan your stay around a festival date, historic sights, or trails and natural attractions.
Golling Castle, Museum and Churches
Golling Castle Museum was founded in 1969 as a local history museum. Its special and permanent exhibitions explore the regional natural and cultural history of the valley and mountain regions along the Salzach. According to the monument inventory, as of 30 June 2025, Golling Castle is protected as a historic monument by ordinance.
The Golling Festival began in 2000 as a concert series with five concerts at the castle. Tickets for festival events can be purchased online; check the specific dates and ticket information before your trip. The free Festival Express takes guests with mobility impairments to Golling Castle. If you would like to use this service, check the operating hours in advance.
The churches also offer their own historical and architectural points of interest: Golling Parish Church was first mentioned as a place of worship in 1384. The pilgrimage church of St. Nicholas has a polygonal exterior pulpit with a balustrade made of red Adnet marble. Polygonal describes the pulpit’s many-sided shape; the red marble is another specific detail of its design.
Waterfall and Trails in Bluntautal
Golling Waterfall is in the district of Torren and cascades down a total of 76 metres in two drops. Two different walking times are useful for planning: the start of the waterfall can be reached on foot from Golling town centre in about 30 to 45 minutes. There is also a circular hike at the waterfall that takes about 1.5 hours and leads to the source in Schwarzbach Cave. The first time refers to the walk from the town centre to the start of the waterfall, and the second to the circular hike to the source.
Bluntautal is a protected landscape area. Its circular trail has viewpoints and benches along the route. You can also choose your route based on whether viewpoints and places to sit along a circular trail are important to you.
Salzach Gorge and the Seasons Trail
The Salzach Gorge is up to 80 metres deep and about 1.5 kilometres long; it is a natural monument in Golling an der Salzach. A hike through the gorge follows well-secured walkways and trails. There is also an approximately 800-metre-long flying fox ride over the Salzach. While the hike follows walkways and trails, the flying fox ride passes over the river—two different ways to experience the gorge.
The Seasons Trail by Lake Egelsee has 32 information boards as well as stations devoted to body, mind and soul, and to strength, tranquillity and meditation. Those who would like to include themed stations when choosing a hike will find a different focus here than at the waterfall and gorge: the topics listed give the trail its structure. Body, mind and soul, as well as strength, tranquillity and meditation, address physical, mental and contemplative aspects.
