Leiben offers several different points of interest to consider when planning your trip. If you are looking for a hotel in Leiben, you can start by thinking about whether culture, views or walking will shape your stay. The options range from historic sites and a collection to trails with a specific nature destination or named route. For activities on the water, the Danube Lake in Weitenegg and the Weitenegg Leisure Centre are separate points of interest.

Culture, castle and views

Leiben Castle, around 800 years old, lies north of Melk in the southern Waldviertel. Leiben Church stands above the town at an elevation of about 355 metres and offers magnificent long-distance views of the Alpine foothills. The castle’s history and the view from the church appeal to different interests: the castle provides the historic point of interest, while the church turns your gaze towards the Alpine foothills. The Austrian Weighing Museum displays more than 1,000 scales from 70 countries. The number conveys the size of the collection, while their origins in 70 countries reflect its international breadth. The “Models of Success” exhibition occupies two floors in the west wing of Leiben Castle. Your cultural itinerary can therefore include everything from a historic castle, views and a collection to a specifically named exhibition in the castle. “West wing” refers to the western part of the castle building, making it possible to pinpoint the exhibition more precisely. Its spread across two floors describes a different dimension from that of the weighing collection: there, the focus is on the number of exhibits and their origins in 70 countries.

Trails with different points of interest

The trails each have a different point of interest. After around two kilometres on the Beaver Loop, you reach a remnant of floodplain forest designated as a natural monument; there you can see the beavers’ “workplaces”. The Nibelungengau 5 long-distance hiking trail starts at Europaschloss Leiben. The route of the Way of St James in the Southern Waldviertel is described through several waypoints: it crosses the Danube Bridge to Emmersdorf, follows the towpath to Urfahr, then branches off uphill towards Leiben. When choosing a trail, you can consider whether a nature destination after around two kilometres, a starting point with a name, or the sequence of waypoints on the Way of St James matters most to you.

Water activities in Weitenegg

Swimming, sailing, rowing and surfing are possible at the Danube Lake in Weitenegg. The Weitenegg Leisure Centre has a child- and family-friendly bathing beach. It also offers pedal boat hire, Aquajump, a children’s playground and a beach volleyball court. To help you choose, note the distinction: the four water activities are the main draw at the Danube Lake, while the leisure centre offers a child- and family-friendly beach along with other recreational activities.
