The Danube shapes Marbach on the Danube’s setting. Hiking, cycling routes, swimming options and local history offer different focal points when planning your stay. Hiking destinations range from the entrance to the Steinbach Gorge to a designated 9.04-kilometre stage.

Hiking to the Steinbach Gorge and on Kalvarienberg

The entrance to the Steinbach Gorge can be reached from Marbach by following the Steinbach towards Münichreith for about one kilometre. Another hiking option is the third stage of the Nibelungengau long-distance trail. It runs from the boat landing in Marbach to the entrance to Maria Taferl and passes through the Steinbach Gorge. The stage is designated as a moderately difficult hike covering 9.04 kilometres. This provides two different distances as a guide: about one kilometre to the gorge entrance and the designated, longer hiking stage. The route details were updated in August 2026 and may be revised; check them before setting out.

The path to Kalvarienberg leads from the Church of St. Martin up about 100 steps to the three crosses. Here, the flight of steps leading to a clearly identified destination provides a concrete guide for the route. Together with the gorge entrance and the longer Nibelungengau stage, Kalvarienberg offers another, differently described option to consider when planning a hike.

Cycling routes and trips on the Danube

Cycling routes run along both banks of the Danube and through the side valleys. When planning, you can therefore consider routes on both sides of the river as well as cycling routes in the side valleys. A trip on the MS Marbach is another option: the vessel is used for excursion trips and also serves as a ferry. If you plan to include a trip as a fixed part of your itinerary, check the relevant date in advance.

Swimming and water sports

The Nibelungenbad has a swimming pool, a children’s pool and large sunbathing lawns. It also offers opportunities for tennis, basketball, table tennis and table football. Alongside swimming, the pool complex therefore offers other sports and recreational activities. Seasonal opening hours are listed for 2026. Check the times before visiting, as operating details may change.

As of September 2026, the WSC Wakesharks offered taster courses for beginners and guided trips on the Danube. The offerings also included wakeboarding and wakesurfing for beginners and experts. The courses, trips and water sports are different ways to get active on the water. As availability and participation requirements may change, check the current offerings before making plans.

Architecture and history in Marbach

The Nibelungenhof is a former inn dating from the early 15th century. Its architectural features include a distinctive mansard hipped roof, a Baroque façade and old vaulted cellars. These details give the building a clearly recognizable architectural character, while its former use as an inn adds historical context.

The schoolhouse in Marbach was built in 1914 as Clemens Holzmeister’s first work. The primary school was built on the site of a grain storage building erected in 1493 for the fruit trade, which was demolished except for a few walls. The school site is therefore also connected with the area’s earlier trading history. The pillory in Marbach on the Danube is a protected monument; an entry by the Federal Monuments Authority dated June 23, 2026, records this status.
