Artstetten: Castle, Park and Way of St. James
Accommodation in Artstetten
Artstetten combines castle history and a natural castle park with hiking and cycling routes to suit different travel plans. If you choose the town as a destination, you can focus on the castle and park, take a walk, or cycle a stage of a route. When planning your visit, both the seasonal park opening times and the different types of routes are important.
Castle, Church and Natural Castle Park
Artstetten Castle was the former residence of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and is his final resting place. St. James Parish Church is located directly next to the castle. The two sites are therefore closely connected geographically and offer different points of interest for a cultural and historical stay.
Artstetten Natural Castle Park is one of Austria’s 56 historic gardens and parks designated as particularly worthy of protection under the Federal Monuments Protection Act. More than 1,000 peonies are in full bloom there, especially from May to July. In 2026, the park is open daily from 10:00 to 16:30, from April 1 to November 1. The peony season therefore falls within the stated park opening period. When choosing your dates, you can take into account both the seasonal blooms and the period when the park is open.
Hikes and Ways of St. James
The short IVV Artstetten–Maria Taferl circular hiking trail PW 174 is about 11 km long. Around 4 km of it follows the Austrian Way of St. James. A longer loop is the IVV Panorama Trail PW 134: It is about 22 km long and starts at Artstetten’s main square. The two circular hiking trails can be distinguished by their approximate lengths; the Panorama Trail is about twice as long as PW 174.
The Austrian Way of St. James passes through Artstetten and continues to Maria Taferl. The final stage of the Danube Way of St. James also runs from Melk Abbey along the banks of the Danube, via Leiben and Artstetten, to Maria Taferl. This gives pilgrims a choice between a through-route passing through the town and a stage that connects a longer series of named places. For IVV routes PW 174 and PW 134, check the current trail markers locally.
Cycling
One recommended cycling route to Artstetten Castle runs from the Danube via Marbach and Maria Taferl to Artstetten. Bicycle parking is available at the castle museum entrance. The castle also has luggage storage facilities and tools for simple bicycle repairs. This provides information not only about the route but also about specific cycling facilities at the destination.
Planning Your Visit
Group visits to Artstetten Castle can be arranged at any time with advance notice by telephone. If you are planning a group trip, make sure to give notice before your visit. For other interests, the routes mentioned and the seasonally open natural castle park offer different options: a circular hike with an approximate distance, routes connected with the Way of St. James, or a recommended cycling route to the castle.
