In Pöchlarn, Roman history, the life and work of Oskar Kokoschka, architectural history and destinations on the Danube sit side by side. If you are looking for a hotel in Pöchlarn, the focus of your stay can guide your plans: museums, churches, a guided city tour and paths by the water each offer a different perspective.

Museums and Cultural History

The Arelape Bechelaren Pöchlarn Roman City Museum is housed in the Welserturm. It displays Roman excavations and everyday objects from the past. Across several floors, the museum presents archaeological finds and tells the story of the city’s development and its Roman past as Arelape. Groups and visits outside regular opening hours must book in advance. Check seasonal opening information again before your visit.

The Kokoschka Museum Pöchlarn is located in the artist Oskar Kokoschka’s birthplace. The permanent exhibition focuses on his life and work, while special exhibitions on different themes change each year. For the 2026 season, the museum is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., from March 28 to October 26. A guided tour takes place every Saturday at 2:30 p.m. As opening hours are seasonal, check the information again before your visit.

Churches, Towers and the Nibelungs

The Frauenkirche Mariä Himmelfahrt is a three-aisled hall church whose construction began in 1386. The parish church of Mariae Himmelfahrt has a Late Gothic core and was given a Baroque makeover by Johann Michael Ehmann in 1766–68. Its interior includes three paintings by the Kremser Schmidt. The church thus offers a way to trace several stages of its architectural history, from its Late Gothic core to its Baroque transformation.

Pöchlarn Renaissance Castle is a cultural landmark right on the Danube. The Urfahrturm, also known as the Demmerturm, was a fortified tower on the eastern edge of the town. Its former function distinguishes it from the Nibelungen monument, which is freely accessible. “The Nibelungs in the Tower” offers its own introduction to the medieval heroic epic: restored Nibelung figures at several stations guide visitors through its story.

City Tours and Paths by the Water

A guided city tour follows the Danube embankment, passes through the streets and visits picturesque squares. Tours can be tailored to travel groups, company outings, school trips and large families. When planning, you can choose between a guided walk and exploring on your own, while still taking in the city’s different historical sites.

The Donau.Auszeit.Wiese offers a riverside spot for picnics and breaks for walkers and cyclists, with views across the Danube. At Zehenbad, you can stop, listen to the water and cool your toes. Both places invite you to spend time by the water; the Rüdigerweg, by contrast, offers a route alongside several bodies of water. It follows the Stadt Weyer pond and continues along the Erlauf to its confluence with the Danube. It then runs along the Danube back to the starting point. This lets you choose between a riverside break and a route that links the pond, the Erlauf and the Danube.

For your stay, the museums and churches offer points of interest in culture and architectural history, while the city tour takes in streets, squares and the Danube embankment. The riverside spots and the Rüdigerweg offer a different perspective. The topics that interest you most can help you plan your stay in Pöchlarn.
