Maria Taferl can be explored as a travel destination primarily through its pilgrimage traditions, sacred art and hiking trails. If you are looking for a hotel in Maria Taferl, the focus of your stay may be the deciding factor: would you like to concentrate on the basilica and its religious history, or compare various routes through the landscape? The different route details help you plan how much time to set aside for your hikes.

Basilica, views and sacred history

Maria Taferl Basilica is Lower Austria’s regional shrine to Our Lady of Sorrows. It stands on a hill 233 metres above the Danube; from here, far-reaching views extend across the Danube Valley, the rolling landscape of the Mostviertel and the Alpine range. If you would like to learn more about the basilica, you can arrange a guided tour in advance. It lasts around 20 to 30 minutes; check the booking details beforehand.

In the Treasury, you can see a room painted with frescoes in the popular Baroque style. The frescoes depict the origins of Maria Taferl as well as healings and rescues. The Opferstein, or sacrificial stone, is also part of the site’s history: it is believed to have been a former pagan Celtic place of worship that was converted into a Christian shrine. At the western end of the church square, the provincial war memorial commemorates those who did not return from various wars.

Works of art and day-trip destinations

The Mechanical Nativity Scene is a protected work of art featuring more than 300 figures and is considered unique in Austria. Its scenes tell the story and origins of Maria Taferl through motifs from the Bible. Fully automated and brought to life with light and sound, it combines biblical stories with a depiction of the town’s history. The Alpenpanorama Maria Taferl house museum also features a mechanical Alpine panorama from the early 20th century, built by Leopold Steindl.

Because of the ridge, the monastery garden is arranged across four terraces and offers views of the Danube and the Alps. A recurring event is the annual Advent village, held on the first weekend of Advent, where craftspeople showcase their work. The monastery cellar has a different history: formerly used for storage and wine, it now serves as an event space.

Compare hiking trails by distance and duration

The 4-kilometre Engelweg is a circular hiking trail that ends at Maria Taferl Basilica. Marbach and the ferry landing are listed as alternative starting points. A longer route is the 31-kilometre section of the Way of St James from Melk to Persenbeug: it runs along the Danube via Maria Taferl. This route connects the town with a long-distance pilgrimage trail, while the Engelweg is a circular route.

For shorter routes, the distance and walking time make it easier to compare options. Almkogel is a 2-kilometre, shaded forest path; the walking time is around 30 minutes each way. At 3.5 kilometres, Waldpromenade is longer and is described as a circular trail for running and Nordic walking. Steinbachklamm is an 8.5-kilometre circular hiking trail through a gorge; the stated walking time is 3 to 4 hours. These three options differ in distance, route type and time required, without this implying any general statement about their difficulty.

Another option is the 5.5-kilometre route to Artstetten. It runs one way along forest and meadow paths and is a section of both the Way of St James and the Ysper-Weitental Trail No. 22. The Sonntagberg Trail starts in Maria Taferl and heads towards Sonntagberg along panoramic paths through the rolling countryside; at first, it follows the Austrian Way of St James. This allows you to choose between circular routes, a one-way route and longer sections of pilgrimage trails.
