Dorfstetten: Forests, Trails and Craft History
Accommodation in Dorfstetten
Dorfstetten lies on the southern edge of the Weinsberg Forest in the upper part of the small Ysper Valley; dark fir and spruce forests define the village and its scattered settlements. Numerous viewpoints, natural monuments and distinctive landscapes add to the many hiking opportunities. Other highlights include the parish church dedicated to Saint Ulrich, a leisure facility with a demonstration mill and Venetian sawmill, and a landscaped pond with a nature playground beside it. You can combine your stay with forest trails, local history and a range of leisure activities.
Forest and Trails
Hiking trail Burgsteinmauer No. 94 leads through the high forest to the Burgsteinmauer. The challenging climb over uneven terrain is rewarded with a magnificent view. If you are planning a hike with a demanding ascent and a scenic viewpoint, this route offers a specific focus for your outing.
The many small monuments are best explored on foot, perhaps on a short walk or along the signposted meditation trail. Hinteredt Hiking Trail No. 96 leads to the Hubertus Chapel, about 200 metres beyond the forester’s lodge. There is ample free parking at the church square, which is also the starting point for the hiking trails.
There is also a connection for horseback riders: Dorfstetten has a direct link to the riding trail networks of the MĂĽhlviertler Alm and the Waldviertler Hochland horse paradise. The riding trails add another way to explore the landscape alongside the hiking options.
Church and Crafts
Dorfstetten’s parish church is dedicated to Saint Ulrich. Its oldest sections of masonry date from the 14th century; a Baroque onion dome and Gothic tracery windows define the church building. The cemetery is also part of the protected ensemble: a decree grants both the church and cemetery monument protection. The name Dorfstetten was first mentioned in 1275, placing it further back in the recorded history of the village than the church’s oldest surviving masonry.
Dorfstetten’s leisure facility features a working demonstration mill and a Venetian sawmill with original antique exhibits. Guided tours vividly show how grain becomes bread and tree trunks become boards. Group tours of the demonstration mill and sawmill are available by arrangement for groups of ten or more. This offers a chance to learn about traditional processing of two different materials: grain and wood.
Nature and Leisure
The landscaped pond invites you to relax and linger all year round. Right beside it, the nature playground gives children plenty of space to play and let off steam. Since May 2025, the leisure facility has also had a natural bowling lane. It is suitable for families, groups of friends, club evenings or an active afternoon, adding a social activity to the village’s leisure options.
Bogensport Waldviertel’s 3D course is located in the Yspertal high forest and can be used year-round, weather and snow conditions permitting. Archers can test their accuracy at 30 targets. Bow rental, including the required equipment, and a short introductory lesson are available by prior arrangement. When planning your visit, check whether weather and snow conditions will allow you to use the course on your chosen date.
Regional Produce
Honighaus Frasl produces various types of honey, beeswax candles, propolis drops, mead, honey vinegar and oxymel. There is also a farm shop where you can make a purchase. The apiary adds a selection of local products to the impressions of nature, crafts and local history.
