Sankt Oswald lies north of the 1,013-metre-high Burgsteinberg. To the south, views extend as far as the Alps; gently rolling meadows and dense forests shape the landscape. There are several well-marked hiking trails throughout the municipality. For planning a stay focused on hiking, the selection offers routes of different lengths, difficulty levels and themes.

Hiking trails with different focuses

The Fitness Trail Loop leads to a lookout tower with Alpine views and includes a fitness trail with 16 stations. The Peace Cross Trail No. 12 starts at the church square, is 3 kilometres long and is rated easy. The loop trail offers panoramic views in all four cardinal directions. The Kneipp Trail also starts at the church square; it is of moderate difficulty and measures 10 kilometres, with an estimated walking time of around 3 hours.

The two routes starting at the church square can therefore be easily distinguished by the time and difficulty involved: the Peace Cross Trail is three kilometres and rated easy, while the Kneipp Trail is a moderately difficult ten-kilometre route with a walking time of around three hours. An inn mentioned on the Kneipp Trail is marked as closed. So do not make a stop there a fixed part of your plans.

The 9-kilometre Heart Stone Trail (Hiking Trail No. 11) starts at the church square. Its ten stations convey values that are important in life. The well-known Heart Stone resembles a human heart. As its name suggests, the Skull Stone resembles a skull.

The routes also differ in theme: the Fitness Trail Loop combines exercise with a scenic destination, while the Heart Stone Trail focuses on values that are important in life. This means that, alongside length and difficulty, the content you want from a route can also guide your choice.

Views and natural features

At an altitude of 975 metres, Burgsteinmauer has a viewing platform overlooking the valley. In clear weather, views from Burgsteinmauer extend across the Southern Waldviertel, the Mühlviertel and the Alpine foothills to the Alps—from Großer Priel in the Totes Gebirge to Schneeberg and Dachstein.

Since summer 2019, a larch-wood summit cross and a summit register, where visitors can sign their names, have stood on Burgsteinmauer. Along with the valley view and the distant panorama, the viewpoint offers several specific landmarks to look out for.

Local history and customs

The church built by Friedrich von Stephaning was elevated to parish church and consecrated in 1160 by his uncle, Konrad, Bishop of Passau. This links the local church to a clearly dated episode in local history.

The blessing of herbs is considered an old custom. Reports dated 17 August 2025 and 15 August 2026 describe how Chaplain Thomas Schmid blessed herb bundles, which were distributed after Mass.

St. Oswald swimming pond

St. Oswald swimming pond is located 100 metres west of Sankt Oswald in a peaceful setting. Facilities include a sunbathing lawn, a children’s playground and a canteen. As facilities and conditions on site may change, check the current situation before visiting.
