Schwallenbach combines historic buildings, walks along the Danube, cycling and wine and fruit growing. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, you can choose where to stay based on whether history, a walk, a bike ride or local produce is most important to you. The train connection and accessible bus service are also practical points to consider when planning your trip.

History and Buildings

Schwallenbach was first mentioned in a document in 830 as part of the historic “Locus Wahowa.” Schloss Glöckerl vom Schwallenbach, at Schwallenbach 27 (as of June 23, 2026), is a listed building. According to a historical account, the castle was destroyed by fire in 1463 and rebuilt by the Polheim family in 1617. The building has an irregular layout and features a four-storey tower and an open arcaded courtyard.

The branch church of St. Sigismund was first mentioned in 1419. Its altarpiece depicting Saint Sigismund was painted by Kremser Schmidt in 1767. Fragments of exterior frescoes depicting Saint George and an oversized figure of Saint Christopher have been preserved. The church thus brings together a medieval first mention, an 18th-century altarpiece and surviving exterior frescoes.

Rannahof is also part of the historic building stock. It has a courtyard and a square tower, and later belonged to the Pauline monastery of Oberranna. Alongside the details about the castle and church, it adds another building with its own monastic history.

Walking Along the Danube

A long walk is possible along the Danube near Schwallenbach. Natural sandy beaches are among the attractions in the area around Schwallenbach station. One district of Spitz an der Donau is known for its historic stone houses. The historic lanes in this district can also be explored on foot. When planning, you can therefore consider a longer riverside walk and a stroll through the district’s lanes as separate options.
