Maria Laach Am Jauerling
Accommodation in Maria Laach Am Jauerling
Maria Laach Am Jauerling lies in the heart of the Jauerling-Wachau Nature Park. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay here, the attractions can help you define the character of your trip: sacred art, a variety of trails, views or regional specialties. The pilgrimage church, the Three Churches Trail, the Kraftweg trail and the Maria Laach-Jauerling hike each offer a different focus. The farmers’ market and Rufbus are also specific points you can include in your plans.
Pilgrimage church and Late Gothic altarpiece
The Maria Laach pilgrimage church has largely retained its medieval furnishings and houses the miraculous image “Maria Sechsfinger” (Mary with Six Fingers). The parish and pilgrimage church also has a double-winged altarpiece created in 1480. It is one of Lower Austria’s best-preserved Late Gothic works of carving and painting. The miraculous image and the dated altarpiece offer two specific ways to explore the church: one is associated with pilgrimage, while the other can be placed in its historical and art-historical context. Together with the largely preserved furnishings, they give an impression that takes into account both individual works of art and the church’s medieval character.
Three trails with different focuses
The Three Churches Trail ends at the pilgrimage church of the Visitation of Mary in Maria Laach. It connects the original parish church of St. Stephen in Weiten with the pilgrimage church of St. Andrew in Heiligenblut. The focus is therefore on three named sacred destinations in different places. This distinguishes the trail from the Maria Laach Kraftweg, which has eleven stations. The named stations include the Sound Station, the Terrace Path and the Stone Gate.
Another option is the Maria Laach-Jauerling hike. It leads across the Jauerling plateau and along gentle forest trails. The hiking trail is consistently marked with uniform yellow signs. The trails can be distinguished by their respective focus: the Three Churches Trail connects churches, stations shape the route of the Kraftweg, and the Jauerling plateau and forest trails take center stage on the Maria Laach-Jauerling hike. When planning, you can decide whether you want to focus on sacred destinations, individual trail stations or the landscape described here.
Views from Jauerling
The Jauerling observation tower is made of wood and stands at an elevation of 960 m. The tower itself is 38 m tall—the two measurements therefore describe the location and the structure. From there, the panoramic view stretches from the Danube Valley across the Dunkelsteinerwald to the Alps and southern Waldviertel. This clearly identified viewpoint adds a distinct perspective on several landscapes to the trails in the surrounding area. If both hiking and a panorama are important to you during your stay, you can treat the view as a separate activity alongside the trail options described here.
Farmers’ market and Rufbus
The Maria Laach farmers’ market takes place every Saturday at Kerblerhaus on the market square in Maria Laach. Jauerling farmers’ specialties are on offer. If you plan to visit the market, check the date in advance for your travel day. The Jauerling Rufbus operates at weekends and connects Aggsbach, Emmersdorf, Maria Laach, Mühldorf, Raxendorf, Spitz and Weiten. Before travelling, check the current timetable and applicable reservation requirements, as timetables and reservation requirements may change.
