Hiking and scenery

The five-kilometre Edelberg circular trail begins in the market square of Aggsbach Markt. The 355-metre-high Edelberg is located in the municipality of Aggsbach-Markt in the Wachau region, on the left bank of the Danube. This gives you the starting point and the length of the circular trail for your planning; the elevation indicates the height of the mountain itself.

The Jauerling Loop 02 leads from Aggsbach Markt to Maria Laach. It passes through woodland and meadows, by remote hamlets and up to the Jauerling plateau. Sturdy hiking boots, rain gear, and plenty of drinks and provisions are recommended for this tour. When hiking, you can therefore choose between a circular trail with a specified distance and a route with a named destination and specific preparation recommendations.

If you pay particular attention to trail character and woodland on a hike, you will find these features on the Bireben circular trail: it follows an unpaved forest path through a mixed hornbeam-oak forest. Aggsbach Markt railway station lies at the foot of the Jauerling, in the heart of the Wachau.

Parish Church and Wachau Cultural History

The parish church of the Assumption of Mary was built between 1286 and 1300. It is a former late-Romanesque, flat-roofed, three-aisled pillar basilica with a raised central nave and a Gothic ribbed vault. Two Romanesque church portals are also part of its architecture. “Three-aisled” describes a layout with a central nave and two side aisles; the raised central nave adds to this arrangement. The ribbed vault refers to another, Gothic architectural form. The term “pillar basilica” adds details about the building type and its supports: “basilica” describes the type of building, while “pillar” refers to the supporting columns. Together with the portals and vault, these give you several specific features to look for in the church’s architecture.

A separate historical milestone was its elevation to parish church: in 1724, after a period as a popular pilgrimage church, it was elevated to an independent parish church. The construction period from 1286 to 1300 and its elevation in 1724 therefore represent different aspects of its history: the creation of the church building and a later ecclesiastical role.

A themed trail in Aggsbach Markt outlines the cultural history of the Wachau on twelve information panels. This adds a regional perspective on Wachau cultural history to the architectural history of an individual building. You can consider the church’s architectural features and the trail’s themes as different ways of exploring the region’s cultural heritage.

Themed areas at the Hubhof Family Park

Hubhof Family Park features a dinosaur forest with a prehistoric exhibition and life-size dinosaurs. In the Indian Land area, visitors can search for gemstones and try lasso and horseshoe throwing. The Fairy-Tale Forest features characters and stories from the Brothers Grimm. The park thus highlights prehistoric displays, named activities and fairy-tale motifs as distinct themes.
