Senftenberg combines the castle ruins above the vineyards of the Krems Valley with striking rock formations, the former monastery church in Imbach, a cycling route and wine-related experiences. The attractions focus on different things: castle and church history, paths to viewpoints, cycling or wine tastings. If you are considering Senftenberg as a place to stay, you can compare these themes with your travel plans and decide what to focus on during your stay.

Castle Ruins and Wine Country

The stone hilltop castle of Senftenberg was probably built in the 11th century. Swedish troops under General Torstenson later conquered the castle and burned it to the ground; it has been a ruin ever since. From its elevated position, the castle ruins overlook the vineyards of the Krems Valley. The region’s characteristic Riesling, grown on primary rock soils, is cultivated there. This means the site brings together the history of the hilltop castle and views of regional winegrowing.

Rocks and Viewpoints

A path from the town center leads to the striking rocks at Schatzwand–12 Aposteln: they can be reached in about ten minutes via the hiking trail on long-distance trail 606. From there, you can enjoy views of Senftenberg and the ruins. The route therefore combines a view of the town with one of the historic building.

Other destinations have their own route connections. Schanzriedel is a 508-meter-high rocky summit and viewpoint, accessible via the Poberkreuz–Herzogentisch hiking trail. From the Senftenberg sports ground in the Reichaubach Valley, a hiking trail dotted with rocks leads to the “Heimliches Gericht” at an altitude of 585 meters. The Hiesbergwarte is 427 meters above sea level, on a large granite rock tower at the steeply sloping Hiesberg wall. The ascent begins in the Hiesberg district near the campsite.

In order of elevation, the three destinations mentioned most recently are at 427 meters at the Hiesbergwarte, 508 meters at Schanzriedel and 585 meters at the “Heimliches Gericht.” This comparison helps you compare the elevations of the destinations; their respective starting points and trail connections further distinguish the routes.

Church and Monastery Garden in Imbach

The former Imbach monastery church, in the municipality of Senftenberg, is also part of Senftenberg’s history. It dates from the 13th century and is considered Austria’s oldest surviving two-aisled hall church. The church is therefore a distinct point of interest for visitors interested in historic buildings.

In the cadastral municipality of Imbach, there is also a small, adventurous playground on the grounds of the former monastery garden. The playground and the historic church offer different points of interest when planning a stay in Senftenberg.

Wine, Cycling and Getting There

The association dedicated to preserving Senftenberg Castle Ruins organizes guided tours and wine tastings by prior arrangement. The Nigl winery, hotel and restaurant in Senftenberg also offers wine tastings at the winery. Wines from the Krems Valley are served at Restaurant Nigl, including GrĂĽner Veltliner, Riesling and Blauer Zweigelt. Be sure to arrange in advance if you would like a guided tour or tasting with the association.

The Rieden-Runde Kremstal route passes through Senftenberg, vineyards and deciduous forests. You can experience the wine country both from the castle ruins and as part of the cycling route. Senftenberg is also accessible by train and bus. If you plan to travel by either of these modes of transport, check the current connections in advance.

When choosing a hotel in Senftenberg, you can first consider which of these themes matter most to you during your stay: the castle ruins and their history, the church in Imbach, the viewpoints, the cycling route or the wine experiences. This lets you match the destination to your personal interests before checking a specific hotel offer.
