Gedersdorf: Vineyards, Hiking Trails and Historic Churches
Accommodation in Gedersdorf
Gedersdorf combines winegrowing, routes through river and floodplain landscapes, and historic churches. When looking for a hotel in Gedersdorf, it helps to consider whether you would like to focus your stay on hiking, cycling, winegrowing or architectural history. You can explore these different themes through specific places and routes.
Hiking and Cycling in Gedersdorf
Rural roads in Gedersdorf invite you to take uphill walks with views across the Danube region. Hiking trails through vineyards offer views of the northern Tullnerfeld and the foothills of the Alps. On the Spiegelweg, a viewpoint sits on a vineyard, directly on the Kremstal-Danube long-distance hiking trail. A seating area built by the municipality’s women farmers and winegrowers invites you to linger there. From this spot, the view stretches across the Kremstal wine region to the foothills of the Alps; visibility depends on the weather. Conditions on individual routes may vary, so it is advisable to check the situation before setting out.
There are also several route options for cyclists: signposted cycling routes run along the Danube and into the Waldviertel. A separated pedestrian and cycle path connects Gedersdorf and Stratzdorf. It begins at the junction with Gartenstraße and runs along the west side of the Kellergasse to the Stratzdorf village sign. Completion of this path was reported on February 18, 2026. The Kremstal-Danube 05 long-distance hiking trail stage is called “Hollenburg–Gedersdorf.” It first runs directly along the Danube through floodplain landscapes, then continues through fields and orchards to Theiß and Brunn im Felde.
Winegrowing, Wine Cellar Lanes and Heuriger Taverns
Several wine cellar lanes lie in the loess gullies on Gedersdorf’s hillside; they include lovingly maintained wine-press houses. The south-facing terraces are shaped by winegrowing: Grüner Veltliner and Rheinriesling grow especially well there, while Zweigelt is the predominant red grape variety. In Gedersdorf, characteristic winegrowing sites meet routes through vineyards and floodplain landscapes.
The Heuriger taverns in Gedersdorf serve excellent wines and traditional local cuisine. Since opening dates vary, it is best to check in advance whether a Heuriger will be open during your trip.
Churches and Historic Traces
Gedersdorf’s subsidiary church is one of the oldest churches on the Wagram and was built around 1300. It is dedicated to Saint Philip and Saint James. In Brunn im Felde, the parish church is dedicated to Saint James the Greater. The present parish church in Theiß dates from 1842–1843 and was built in place of a plague chapel dating from 1715–1716; it is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of Mary.
The chapels in the other villages also have their own dedications and building histories. The present chapel in Schlickendorf replaced a wooden chapel built in 1717 and is dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua. The chapel in Stratzdorf is dedicated to Saint Joseph. Former monastery estates add another dimension to this historical picture: the Admonterhof in Brunn im Felde was the farm estate of Admont Abbey, while the Dominikalhof in Stratzdorf was the estate of Herzogenburg Abbey.
