Kaindorf brings together two hiking trails with different routes and two cultural highlights: a timber-framed granary and a facade painting. The Hemma Pilgrimage Route reaches the settlement on its way from Hochrindl to Weitensfeld; after the Church of St. Aemilian, the Church Hiking Trail descends towards Kaindorf. These routes offer different points of reference for planning your trip, while the Neritscher Kasten granary and the facade painting bring a Stromberger building and an image into focus.

Hiking trails: routes, terrain and waypoints

The Hemma Pilgrimage Route runs from Hochrindl to Weitensfeld and reaches the settlement of Kaindorf after a short stretch through the forest. In the Kaindorf section, it follows a level gravel path eastwards through meadows and fields to the main road. A small bridge is also crossed along this route in Kaindorf. The transition from forest to settlement, as well as the path surface, direction and landscape of the Kaindorf section, therefore provide concrete points of reference.

The Church of St. Aemilian is the point of reference on the Church Hiking Trail. From there, the trail continues downhill towards Kaindorf and then crosses the Gurk Bridge. The trail also offers views of the Gurktal landscape. The descent, bridge and views give this hiking trail its own waypoints.

To choose between the two routes, consider the specific differences described: the defining features of the Kaindorf section of the Hemma Pilgrimage Route are its level gravel path and eastward direction. On the Church Hiking Trail, the Church of St. Aemilian, the descent towards Kaindorf and the Gurk Bridge provide orientation. The landscapes also differ: meadows and fields along the Hemma Pilgrimage Route, and views of the Gurktal landscape on the Church Hiking Trail.

Check the trail conditions before setting out, as route descriptions may change.

Building culture and facade painting

The Neritscher Kasten is a three-storey granary built using timber-frame construction on a masonry foundation. Its purpose, number of storeys, construction and base are all relevant to understanding it. The three storeys describe the building’s vertical layout; timber-frame construction and the masonry foundation refer to different parts of its structure. Those interested in architecture can appreciate the granary not only for its function as a grain store, but also for its form and construction.

Another cultural highlight is the Stromberger facade painting. A life-size depiction of Saint Christopher is painted on the facade of Café Stromberger, by the petrol station in Kaindorf. Here, the focus is on the image, rather than on the construction of a granary. It is a depiction on the facade of a named location in Kaindorf.

The two highlights also differ in what catches the eye: at the Neritscher Kasten, it is a three-storey building and its construction; in the facade painting, it is the life-size depiction of Saint Christopher. This allows you to consider the building and the image as two distinct cultural highlights of Kaindorf.
