Flattnitz is a pass steeped in history in the Gurktal Alps, connecting Carinthia with Styria. Historic buildings, alpine trails, and activities for different interests give visitors concrete reasons to choose a stay here. If you are looking for a hotel in Flattnitz, consider whether local history or nature and outdoor activities are more important to you.

Pass Location, Access, and Lake

Flattnitz lies at around 1,400 m above sea level and is accessible via the well-maintained Flattnitz State Road (L63). Lake Flattnitz adds a distinctive landscape feature: it lies amid coniferous forests, and a circular trail runs around it. Alongside the pass itself, the lake and its woodland surroundings offer concrete points to consider when planning your stay.

Buildings and History

The Church of St. John in Flattnitz is an early Gothic rotunda built around 1330. Its architectural features include a main choir, two polygonal side apses, and a fortified sacristy tower. Together with the former hospice annex to the west, the church forms a picturesque group of buildings. The rotunda, choir, side apses, and tower identify different elements of the church complex, making its design more precisely describable than by its date alone.

Another historic landmark is the Amtshaus (administrative building) in Flattnitz. It was probably built in the 16th century and has been a protected monument since August 1966. The Amtshaus is one of the oldest administrative buildings in Austria and is probably the oldest in Carinthia. The church and the Amtshaus therefore represent different aspects of the area's architectural history: an early Gothic religious building and a historically significant administrative building.

The Roman era is also part of Flattnitz's history. A Roman post road ran from the city of Virunum on the Zollfeld plain through the Gurk Valley, across Flattnitz, and farther north. In addition, the Roman post station Tarnasici is identified with Flattnitz. This connects a specific route over the pass with a historical identification of the location.

Many indulgences were granted for the church in Flattnitz in 1521. This historical detail adds another aspect of local history to the architectural and transport-related connections. Visitors interested in culture can therefore explore several specific points of interest, from the church's architecture to accounts dating back to the Roman era.

Water Trails and Winter Sports

The Almenwasserweg is a 7.4-kilometre circular trail with seven hands-on stations. At the stations, children in particular can play with pumps and water channels. Unlike the circular trail around Lake Flattnitz, this route focuses not only on the landscape but also on its interactive water stations.

For cross-country skiing, Flattnitz offers a total of 10 km of trails in a sunny location. For alpine skiing, Adolf Isopp operates a drag lift and two runs that are especially suitable for children and beginners. Tours and hikes are available for beginners and advanced participants, reaching elevations of up to 1,860 m. These activities vary by type and distance—from the water trail to cross-country skiing and downhill runs, as well as tours and hikes at higher elevations.
