Glödnitz combines hiking trails, nature, church architecture and swimming. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Glödnitz, these themes can help you choose a destination. The forest hiking trail passes Türkenmoos, the Faillacher Kreuz circular trail offers viewpoints overlooking the town and its surroundings, and the natural swimming pond complements the hiking destinations with swimming and leisure activities.

Hiking Trails and Nature

The forest hiking trail starts at the church in Glödnitz and passes the Türkenmoos nature reserve. Türkenmoos lies northwest of the town of Glödnitz on a level saddle at an altitude of around 1,000 metres and covers 19 hectares. It has been a protected area since 1986 and is home to rare raised-bog plants.

The Faillacher Kreuz circular trail offers a different focus: its viewpoints look out over Glödnitz and the surrounding area. There are therefore different options when choosing a route: the forest hiking trail passes the nature reserve, while the circular trail offers views of the town and landscape.

Church Complex and Local History

At the site of the parish church in Glödnitz, Saint Hemma founded a chapel dedicated to Saint Michael in 1043 as the first church. The church complex is one of the few well-preserved medieval fortified churches and is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

The Glödnitz charnel house is a three-storey Late Gothic round building dating from around 1500. The lower floor served as an ossuary, the middle floor as a chapel and the upper floor for defensive purposes. The three floors thus have a clearly differentiated functional layout, rather than merely forming a multi-storey structure.

The official had his seat in the Amthof. The Glödnitz administrative district was responsible for the Glödnitz valley for almost 400 years; its duties included collecting taxes and assigning people to compulsory labour. The valley’s former administration is therefore part of its local history, alongside its church and architectural history.

The Görtschacherkreuz is a broad wayside chapel containing a life-size crucifix and probably dates back at least to the 18th century. To this day, a procession travels from the parish church in Glödnitz to the Görtschacherkreuz on Rogation Monday. If you would like to attend the procession, check the exact date locally.

The dates span very different periods: the first chapel dedicated to Saint Michael was founded in 1043, the charnel house was built around 1500, and the Görtschacherkreuz probably dates back at least to the 18th century.

Swimming and Other Trail Highlights

The Glödnitz natural swimming pond combines swimming with a range of sports and leisure activities. The water is cleaned without chemical additives using a natural regeneration and plant-filter area.

The Flattnitz plateau lies in the Gurktal Alps within the municipality of Glödnitz, at an altitude of around 1,400 metres. The Almenwasserweg Flattnitz also runs through the municipality: this hiking trail, about 7.5 kilometres long, has seven stations on the theme of water and a gentle gradient. As infrastructure and conditions can change, check the latest information before setting out.

Water features in two different ways: it is the theme of the Almenwasserweg stations, while at the natural swimming pond it is associated with swimming and other leisure activities.
