Straßburg is regarded as a former center of ecclesiastical and spiritual life in Carinthia. Straßburg Castle, cultural events in its courtyard and various trails offer themes you can shape your stay around. You may be interested in architectural history and collections, or prefer to focus on trails and leisure facilities.

Straßburg Castle and its history

Straßburg Castle is open continuously from May to September, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.; last admission is at 5:00 p.m. Check the opening hours before your arrival.

By 1147, Straßburg Castle already had a mighty ring wall. Apart from the stable and granary building in the northwest and the servants’ building in the southwest, the complex had largely reached its present-day extent. The castle’s architectural history can therefore be traced both through its fortifications and its spatial layout.

Cultural events and collections

The courtyard of Straßburg Castle regularly hosts exhibitions featuring works by renowned artists, as well as classical and jazz concerts, readings and theatrical performances. Specific programs may vary; if you would like to plan your visit around an event, check the dates in advance.

The Werkmann Collection comprises historic textile treasures dating from the Biedermeier period to around 1940/50. Hermann Sabitzer’s pipe exhibition features countless pipes from around the world. The two displays offer different focal points: one highlights a broad span of textile history, while the other is devoted to pipes from around the world.

Trails to the castle

The Straßburg Riddle Trail starts right at the main square and leads up the hill to the castle, with 20 questions about Straßburg along the way. It was created by the Straßburg Young Farmers’ Association in summer 2021. The Straßburg Castle Herb Trail starts directly in front of the municipal offices and leads to the castle via the Maria Loretto Chapel. The main differences when choosing between the trails are their starting points and themes: questions accompany you along the Riddle Trail, while the chapel is part of the Herb Trail route.

A fitness trail created by Straßburg Middle School leads from the foot of the castle hill to the castle and has 12 stations. At each station, you can access exercise videos using a QR code. With its exercise stations, the trail differs in structure from the two routes themed around riddles and herbs.

Animal park and outdoor pool

Around the castle, the Schloß Straßburg Animal Park has 7 ha of pastureland. The enclosures are home to, among others, fallow and red deer, mouflons, yaks, Cameroon sheep and miniature goats. The animal population may change over time.

The outdoor pool at the Straßburg leisure complex offers views of Straßburg Castle and the thousand-year-old Lieding Church. Alongside architectural history, culture and trails, the animal park and outdoor pool are among the different themes you can consider when planning a stay in Straßburg.
