Frauenstein: Wooden Church, Herb Garden and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Frauenstein
The municipality of Frauenstein lies north of Sankt Veit an der Glan, mostly in the Wimitzer Mountains. Its attractions range from the Church of the Holy Trinity and the herb garden to historic buildings, Lake Kraiger, and hiking and cycling trails. Culture, nature and outdoor activities can all shape your stay in different ways.
Cultural Heritage in Frauenstein
The Church of the Holy Trinity in Dreifaltigkeit is considered Carinthia’s only wooden church. Every year on Trinity Sunday, the Sunday after Pentecost, its patronal feast is celebrated there. The celebrations include an open-air mass in front of the church, followed by a solemn procession through the forest. If you plan to attend, the date falls on the Sunday after Pentecost.
Frauenstein Castle was built around 1519–1521 by Christoph Welzer and his wife Agnes, née Hohenwarter, on the site of a fortified structure documented as early as the beginning of the 13th century. A short family hike leads through rolling hills, forests and fields from the very well-preserved late-medieval Frauenstein Castle to the so-called Kraiger Castles. These include the ruins of Hochkraig and Niederkraig, with an aqueduct and a chapel. The ruins are privately owned, and access is restricted. Check current trail and access conditions before setting out.
Landscape and Trails
Lake Kraiger lies within the 532-hectare Kraiger Schlösser landscape conservation area and has a largely undeveloped shoreline. Frauenstein has hiking and cycling trails that are also open to visitors; some routes form part of the regional cycling network. The municipality provides route information online. As trail networks can change, check the information before setting out. The Glantal/Wimitzer Mountains region is also one of the four regions of the Reiteldorado Kärnten, completed in May 1998.
Herb Garden and Guided Tours
Since 2001, more than 300 different herbs have grown across 800 m² of alpine meadow in the herb garden in Dreifaltigkeit. One- to two-hour guided tours offer expert insight into traditional folk medicine. Arrange your participation before you travel. The special features of the Church of the Holy Trinity are also explained on a half-hour guided tour; check in advance whether this tour is available.
Seasonal Activities and Dining
In winter, you can go cross-country skiing, tobogganing, ice skating and curling in Frauenstein. Plan these seasonal activities with the weather and operating conditions in mind.
The Jägerwirt inn is next to the Church of the Holy Trinity. It serves hearty regional cuisine, including homemade Carinthian specialties, as well as tarts and cakes. Check whether the inn is currently open before visiting.
