The Tasmanian Wilderness covers more than 1.58 million hectares—almost a quarter of the Australian island state of Tasmania. It provides habitat for endemic, rare and threatened species, including the Tasmanian wedge-tailed eagle and the orange-bellied parrot. For Tasmania’s Aboriginal people, it is a valuable cultural landscape where they have lived for around 40,000 years.

Explore landscapes and trails

The landscape around Cradle Mountain also tells a story spanning long periods of time: glacial erosion and deposition have shaped the region over the past two million years. The Overland Track, a 65-kilometre, six-day alpine hike, runs through the centre of Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park. Its length and duration make it a very different planning proposition from a short walk to a single natural attraction.

The path to Russell Falls is paved, wheelchair accessible and takes 15 minutes. If you plan to take this path, check the details before your trip. Mount Field National Park is also home to the Mount Mawson ski field, which operates for winter sports during the winter months. Operations and conditions may vary depending on snow and the season; check conditions in advance for your planned travel dates.

The sea cliffs in Tasman National Park are the highest in Australia. The park can be explored by car, from the water, on foot and even by helicopter. On foot, the Tasman Coastal Trail heads south to Fortescue Bay. These different ways of exploring the park and the trail’s specific route offer various points of reference for planning your time there.

A valid park pass is required to access all of Tasmania’s national parks. Pass rules and fees may change; check the applicable conditions before your visit.

Cultural heritage and cultural expression

Port Arthur is Australia’s largest and most complete convict settlement and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Australian Convict Sites. The Port Arthur Historic Site is open daily from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, except on Christmas Day. Check opening hours before your trip.

The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery also offers a way to engage with culture and history: its First Peoples Art and Culture team is responsible for a global collection of more than 12,000 objects. In Lutruwita/Tasmania, the team works with First Peoples on projects and exhibitions that promote self-determined cultural expression and support cultural continuity.

Mountain biking in Tasmania

In north-east Tasmania, Blue Derby has 125 kilometres of purpose-built enduro trails through forests of tree ferns and myrtle beech trees. The trails are considered suitable for all skill and fitness levels; however, conditions may vary. As the trail network continues to develop, its size may also change. Tasmania also has purpose-built mountain bike trails through rare landscapes. Thus, the cycling options described range from a specific, extensive enduro network to an island-wide selection of purpose-built trails.
