Randalls Bay – Beach and Coastal Trails
Accommodation in Randalls Bay
Randalls Bay brings together several distinct coastal features: a long sandy beach, the circuit trail to Echo Sugarloaf, and tracks to a secluded beach and through coastal vegetation. The landscape ranges from bay and summit views to a rehabilitated quarry area. If you’re looking for a hotel for a stay in Randalls Bay, these specific features can help you choose what to focus on based on your own interests.
Beach and coastal scenery
Randalls Bay Beach is a long sandy beach on a generally calm bay, sheltered by Garden Island and Bruny Island. Wind waves can still occur, depending on the wind’s strength and direction. Wind and waves are therefore conditions you may want to consider when planning a beach visit.
Randalls Bay lies in the coastal area that stretches from Echo Sugarloaf State Reserve via Randalls Bay to Mickeys Beach. The beach is therefore part of a larger stretch of coastline with several named landscape features.
Trails and views
The Echo Sugarloaf Nature Trail is a circuit around Echo Sugarloaf. It climbs the western slope to the 198 m summit and returns along the southern ridge. The western slope and the return route along the southern ridge give the trail a clear sequence through the landscape. From the trail, there are views across Randalls Bay to the Huon River, the D’Entrecasteaux Channel and the mountains to the southwest. This trail therefore links the summit with views of several named waterways and mountain landscapes.
The Quarry Reserve Track runs through a rehabilitated quarry and over river gravel with coastal heath. The area also includes habitats for silver peppermints and Black Gums. The quarry and river gravel shape the terrain; the coastal heath and habitats for these named plants give the track a distinct connection to the vegetation. If, when choosing a trail, you want to consider coastal heath and habitats as well as viewpoints, this track offers a different focus from the circuit to Echo Sugarloaf.
The Mickeys Beach Track begins at the western end of Randalls Bay Beach. From there, it passes over sandstone steps, around the headland and along the coastal reserve to secluded Mickeys Beach. Unlike the circuit to the summit, this track focuses on another beach as its destination; the route description takes you over steps and along the coastal reserve. The two routes therefore highlight different aspects of the landscape.
