Deloraine brings together a river walk in the heart of town, regional art and a strong focus on history. The Deloraine River Walk, Yarns Artwork in Silk and the Deloraine and Districts Folk Museum offer different experiences: a riverside circuit, an artwork about the local region and insights into the history of the early settlers. Deloraine can be explored through these specific places and the themes they convey.

River Walk and Cultural Trail

The Deloraine River Walk is a short loop along the riverbank in the heart of Deloraine. The Kooparoona Niara Cultural Trail follows the same route, so the two names do not refer to separate routes. When planning, you can treat the trail as part of the River Walk rather than counting them as two different walks. Local conditions may change, so it is worth checking the latest situation before setting out.

Yarns Artwork in Silk

Yarns Artwork in Silk tells the story of the local region through its history, landscape and culture. The artwork consists of four panels, each measuring three and a half by four metres, created by more than 300 local artists. It is housed at the Great Western Tiers Visitor Centre in Deloraine. The many contributors and multi-panel format give the work a communal character, while its subject also directs attention to the region as a whole. Its focus therefore differs from the insights into pioneer history offered by the Folk Museum.

Historic Deloraine and the Folk Museum

Deloraine is a historic town classified by the National Trust. Its streetscape is characterised by fine Georgian and Victorian buildings. The Deloraine and Districts Folk Museum focuses on the region’s pioneer history. The museum includes a pioneer village made up of historic buildings that have been reused and reconstructed. It showcases the lives of the early settlers and their agricultural equipment. The museum also includes the Family & Commercial Inn, built in 1863. Together, these present different historical perspectives: one individually dated building and a village area illustrating the lives and farming of the early settlers. The town’s streetscape and the museum complement each other without telling the same kind of history.

Tasmanian Craft Fair

The Tasmanian Craft Fair may also be relevant when planning your dates. The three-day event is held in Deloraine over the long October/November weekend, from Friday to Sunday. The program includes curated exhibitions, live demonstrations, workshops, live music, entertainment and activities for children. Exhibitions and demonstrations offer a different focus from workshops and music. Individual program items may vary from year to year. If you would like to include the event in your trip, check the dates for your chosen year and the accompanying program.
