Mangystau: Rock Sanctuaries, Nature and the Caspian Coast
Accommodation in Mangystau
These highlights offer different perspectives and give you a starting point before you compare specific hotels.
Kazakhstan combines the heritage of the Silk Road and the Baikonur Cosmodrome with landscapes ranging from deserts to alpine areas. Within this diverse national setting, Mangystau has its own distinctive highlights: rock sanctuaries, natural areas and the Caspian coast.
Rock Sanctuaries and Historic Sites
The serial UNESCO World Heritage Site “Rock Mosques and Associated Sacred Sites of Mangystau” comprises five sacred sites carved into the rock and extensive adjoining burial grounds. The five sites date from the 12th to the 18th centuries; the ensemble was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2026. The rock sites have been important pilgrimage destinations for centuries. Sacred use, places carved into the rock and the adjoining burial grounds together form a distinctive historical focus in Mangystau.
The medieval city of Kyzylkala offers another historical perspective and is associated with preserved rock carvings made by nomadic tribes in the 10th century. These carvings therefore date back further than the five UNESCO sites. If you are interested in the region’s history, you can consider these different traces as two separate themes: the sacred rock sites and the rock carvings associated with Kyzylkala.
Canyons, Springs and Landscapes
The Tamshaly area is a natural area in Mangystau with rocky canyons and a freshwater spring. Its water trickles over the rocks. Tamshaly is used for ecotourism and recreation in nature, combining a canyon landscape with a spring as a distinctive natural feature.
Another natural highlight can be found in Kapamsay Canyon: one of its grottoes contains a grove of mulberry trees and hawthorns. Visitors come to Bozzhyra for walks, photography tours, jeep tours and to observe natural landscapes. These activities may be seasonal. If you are planning one of them, check availability for your travel dates.
Aktau and the Caspian Coast
Aktau adds an urban coastal perspective to the region’s natural and historical highlights. The new promenade stretches for several kilometres along the Caspian Sea. It includes a staircase 102 metres long and 24 metres wide, as well as a cycle path. These measurements give a concrete sense of the promenade’s design; the staircase and cycle path are two distinct features of the waterfront.
Boat trips along the Caspian coast aboard a catamaran or motorboat are also offered from the promenade. These trips may vary in availability depending on the season. If you plan to take a trip, it is advisable to check availability for your preferred dates.
Getting There and Finding a Hotel
Aktau International Airport is the airport serving the city of Aktau. Check current flight connections and airport services separately before your trip.
When choosing a hotel, you can start by considering whether you want to focus mainly on the sacred sites, the natural areas, or Aktau and the Caspian coast. These different highlights can help you tailor your search for hotels in Mangystau to your travel interests.
