If you’re looking for a hotel in Tupkaragan District, it helps to consider the region’s different themes: mosques and necropolises carved into rock, canyons and water sources, and Shevchenko heritage in Fort-Shevchenko. The distances to Tauchik and Fort-Shevchenko provide specific geographical reference points.

Rock Mosques and Historic Necropolises

The Shakpak Ata Necropolis and Underground Mosque complex is located 30 km northwest of the village of Tauchik. Shakpak Ata Mosque is carved into limestone on the western slope of a plateau. Four chambers are grouped around a central room with a domed roof. Inscriptions are recorded in Arabic, Turkic Chagatai and Farsi. The mosque is considered the only monument in the Aral-Caspian region whose walls bear inscriptions and drawings. The complex is included in Kazakhstan’s state list of historical and cultural monuments of republican significance.

Kenty Baba Necropolis is also located northwest of Tauchik, at a stated distance of 40 km. It is included in the state list of monuments of local historical and cultural significance. At Kenty Baba Mausoleum, the masonry and decoration point to construction methods and architectural techniques known from medieval Khorezm.

Sultan Epe Underground Mosque is located 30 km northwest of Tauchik and is carved into rock strata. Its nine rooms give the complex a different spatial layout from Shakpak Ata Mosque, where four chambers are grouped around a central domed room.

Canyons, Water and Landscape

Sultan Epe Canyon stretches for five kilometres towards the sea near Sarytas Bay on the northern coast of the Tupkaragan Peninsula. The canyon provides a habitat for various animals and birds, including mountain goats and corsac foxes. The water from Sultan Epe Well is considered drinkable fresh water. Check the water quality locally before drinking it.

Tamshaly is 35 km east of Fort-Shevchenko and is listed both in the state list of local historical and cultural monuments and in the regional list of sacred sites. Fresh water emerges from a cliff edge and falls from a height of three metres. At Tamshaly, this protected historical status sits alongside a distinctive landscape feature.

Shevchenko Heritage in Fort-Shevchenko

The Taras Shevchenko Memorial Complex is considered the first museum to open in Mangystau. It is housed in a building erected in 1853 as the commandant’s summer residence. The complex explores Shevchenko’s life and work during his exile in Mangystau from 1850 to 1857. The history of the building is thus connected to the period covered by the museum.

In Fort-Shevchenko, the Taras poplar has also been cared for as a sacred tree for more than a century. Shevchenko Well lies beneath two rock overhangs and is considered an interesting place for visitors. These sites add a natural landmark and a tree with longstanding cultural significance to the story of Shevchenko’s heritage.

Getting Your Bearings on the Tupkaragan Peninsula

Mangghystau in a Broader Context

Beyond Tupkaragan District, Mangghystau forms part of the wider cultural context of the trip. The serial UNESCO World Heritage property “Rock Mosques and Associated Sacred Sites of Mangystau” was inscribed in 2026. It comprises five sacred sites carved into rock and adjoining extensive burial grounds. The sites date from the 12th to the 18th century and have been important pilgrimage destinations for centuries. This broader context describes Mangghystau; it does not automatically place every attraction within Tupkaragan District.
