Munaily District: Ybykty Sai and Cultural History
Accommodation in Munaily District
Munaily District brings together natural features and regional cultural history. At the heart of the landscape is Ybykty Sai, a limestone canyon with porous, honeycomb-like walls and shifting patterns of light throughout the day. Basqudyq-1 and the museums offer further perspectives on archaeology, school history and ethnography. You can focus your trip plans on nature, geology or cultural themes.
Ybykty Sai: Canyon and Geology
Ybykty Sai is in Munaily District and is a 200-metre-long limestone canyon. Its porous walls resemble honeycomb or porous chocolate; the light on the rocks changes throughout the day. A short walk through the canyon is part of the nature experience described here. Unusual limestone formations reach heights of three to six metres. They are described as a natural monument and dated to the Lower Paleogene, approximately 66 to 41 million years ago.
The figures refer to different scales: 200 metres is the length of the canyon, while three to six metres is the height of the formations. Munaily District is 20 to 23 kilometres from the coast; the landscape is rocky and flat. The distinctive limestone formations therefore contrast with the broad, level landscape.
Travel Planning and Directions
The access road to Ybykty Sai runs along the Kabyrga Tract, near the Mangystau–Beineu railway line. The tract is four kilometres from the railway line and 103 kilometres from Aktau; from there, a scenic drive leads to the canyon. Check local road conditions before setting out.
Munaily has a continental climate with hot summers. As a long-term guide, average January temperatures range from −9 to −4 °C, and average July temperatures from +24 to +38 °C. These two monthly averages illustrate the marked contrast between seasons and can help you choose when to travel.
Culture and History in Munaily District
A museum corner has opened beside the rural cultural centre in Kyzyltobe. Its main exhibit is a traditional yurt associated with Oryn Qulsariev, a cultural figure from Mangystau. The museum corner also displays old artefacts representing Kazakh national values and cultural heritage.
A museum in Munaily District is divided into three thematic sections: school history, the history of the district and ethnography. In 2017, its collection comprised more than 50 artefacts. It also included photographs of important regional events and prominent figures, local literary works, and items made by teachers. The topics therefore range from school and district history to ethnography, complemented by photographs, literature and works by teachers. Check whether the museum corner and museum are currently open before visiting.
Basqudyq-1: An Archaeological Monument
Basqudyq-1 is classified as an archaeological monument of republican significance and as a tourist site. The circular stone ritual structure originally measured about 9.2 metres from north to south and 9.6 metres from east to west. The surviving masonry is still approximately 0.5 metres high. Excavations uncovered human bone fragments and pottery sherds; about 50 vessels were recovered. The directional measurements describe the original ground plan, while the masonry height refers to the surviving portion.
