Aqtöbe: Geology, Pilgrimage Sites and Vast Landscapes
Accommodation in Aqtöbe
The Aqtöbe Region combines striking geological formations with protected natural areas and significant pilgrimage sites. You can choose different focuses when planning your trip: landscapes and geological history, sacred architecture, or a natural phenomenon with a clearly defined season.
Landscapes and Geological Features
Aktolagay is a 90-kilometre-long mountain range in Baiganin District. As a geological and geomorphological site, it is part of the state protection fund of republican and international significance. The Aidarlyasha outcrop reveals another geological dimension: exposed strata extend for 1.5 kilometres along a riverbank, and the stratotype forms a steep cliff up to 50 metres high. The site is of scientific and tourist significance. The long mountain range and the exposed strata with their steep cliff thus represent different types of geological landscape.
Zhamanshin is centred on an impact crater approximately 14 kilometres in diameter. It was formed around one million years ago by a meteorite impact. Tektites and impactites formed during the impact can be found in the crater; the area is considered a site of scientific research and tourist interest. The region’s mountain range, rock outcrop and crater therefore offer different themes for a trip focused on geology.
Nature and landscape conservation also shape the area: the Irgis-Turgai State Nature Reserve protects, among other things, the migration routes of the Betpakdala population of saiga. In the Barkyn Sands, a pine forest rises like an oasis in the desert. These places offer a different focus from the geological formations: here, the emphasis is on a protected habitat and the contrast between sand and forest.
Water, Recreation and Seasonality
The Kargaly Reservoir lies in a mountain depression in Kargaly District. Its surface area is 28.5 square kilometres, and its maximum depth is 31.8 metres. The reservoir is used for recreation, fishing and tourism; tourist routes run around the body of water. The figures for area and depth give two different measures of the reservoir, while its uses and routes describe its recreational appeal.
The time of year is an important planning factor for “Wolf” Waterfall: it is active only in spring, from late April to June. The waterfall is in the gorge of the Ebita River in Kargaly District, 120 kilometres from the city of Aqtöbe. The distance and period of activity answer different questions: the distance locates the site in relation to the city, while the period indicates the season when the waterfall is active.
Pilgrimage Sites and Architecture
The Khan Molasy Memorial Complex is considered a sacred pilgrimage site; Khan Abulkhair is buried in its necropolis. The complex includes a 25-metre-high architectural monument made of white granite and decorated with Kazakh tribal tamgas. The site brings together its status as a place of pilgrimage, the burial ground and the monument’s design.
Abat-Baytak offers another way to explore the history of sacred sites in the region. The necropolis dates from the 14th to the early 20th century and is also a burial and religious complex with a mausoleum. It is located 12 kilometres south of the village of Taldysay in Khobda District. The mausoleum consists of an eleven-sided drum and a conical dome and measures 9.52 × 9.8 metres. In comparison with Khan Molasy, Abat-Baytak stands out particularly for its long historical span and the specific form of its mausoleum architecture.
Getting There and When to Visit
Aliya Moldagulova International Airport offers flights to Astana and Almaty. If you plan to travel via either of these cities, check the flight schedule for your travel dates. The Qarg'aly Fest international tourism festival is an annual event in the region. If the festival is part of your travel plans, confirm the dates for the year in question in advance.
