Balaghat between the Satpura and Wainganga

The city of Balaghat lies in the Satpura ranges, and the Wainganga flows past it. The destination therefore combines city attractions with places in the district that highlight landscapes, religious sites and history. When planning a hotel stay, it helps to decide first what you want to focus on: should the city, with its museum and transport connections, be the main draw, or would you also like to include places such as Gangulpara, Bharveli and Lanji? The sights differ considerably in character and offer different starting points for planning your trip.

Nature experiences: trails, water and views

Gangulpara Tank and Waterfall are in Balaghat district, 14 kilometres from Balaghat on Baihar Road. The forests of Gangulpara offer trekking trails through valleys surrounded by hills, with small springs. The focus is on a range of outdoor experiences: trails wind through forests and valleys, while boating is available on the reservoir. Visitors are provided with life jackets and information about boating. Comparing the trails and water activities lets you choose between getting active on land and taking a trip on the water.

The Jwala Devi Temple in Balaghat district can be reached from the village of Bharveli via a short, uphill walk. The hill offers wide-ranging views. The path and the views make this visit different from the forest trails and boating at Gangulpara. Both a short uphill walk and views from the hill are therefore among the region’s nature and excursion highlights.

Architecture, reliefs and a museum

In the centre of Balaghat, the History and Archaeological Research Institute Museum displays local sculptures. The museum grounds are also home to a narrow-gauge carriage called Dharohar Junction, a special attraction for children. The sculptures and the railway carriage offer different points of interest within the same museum visit: one focuses on local works of art, while the other is a named vehicle on the grounds.

Lanji Fort is located in Lanji tehsil in Balaghat district. Its massive walls, secret tunnels and large entrance gate reflect medieval Indian architecture as well as military strategies and defensive structures. The Mahamaya Vishnu Ganesh Temple is also in Lanji tehsil. Its wall reliefs depict Hindu deities, scenes from epics and glimpses of contemporary life. The district thus offers both the fort’s defensive architecture and the narrative depictions at a temple.

Festivals and religious occasions

Balaghat’s Dussehra festival includes folk theatre, tableau displays known as Jhaankis, and the burning of an effigy of Ravana. During Navaratri, a large number of devotees gather each year at the Maa Kaalipath Temple in Balaghat district. The occasions described differ: Dussehra combines performances with a Ravana effigy, while the Navaratri gathering at the temple is the main focus. If a festival is important to your travel plans, check the dates in advance.

Getting there and planning your trip

Balaghat is connected by NH-543 and state highways to Jabalpur, Nagpur, Mandla, Gondia and Gadchiroli. Balaghat Junction is part of the South East Central Railway and is connected to Gondia, Katangi, Waraseoni and Lamta. These road and rail connections provide a guide for getting there. When choosing a hotel location, you can first consider whether a city visit and transport connections or particular destinations in the district will shape your stay. This helps you tailor your search for hotels in Balaghat to the experiences that interest you most.
