Chiraidongri and the routes to Kanha

When planning routes to the core area of Kanha Tiger Reserve, the first thing to consider is your destination. Road connections from Jabalpur lead to Khatia and Kisli, Mukki, or Sarhi; a 280 km route from Nagpur runs via Chiraidongri to Mukki. So if you’re combining a stay in Chiraidongri with a trip into the reserve, keep your preferred overnight location and planned access point separate. The routes differ both in their waypoints and their destinations.

From Jabalpur: three road routes

Three road routes lead from Jabalpur to the core area. The 155 km connection runs via Mandla, Bamhni, and Jaharmau to Khatia and Kisli. The 189 km route goes via Mandla, Bamhni, Jaharmau, Tatri, and Baihar to Mukki. To reach Sarhi, a 154 km road route runs via Mandla and Bichhia. All three distances refer to the entire road route from Jabalpur to the respective destination.

Length isn’t the only factor in choosing a route: the 154 km and 155 km routes differ by just one kilometer, but lead to different destinations. The 189 km connection leads to Mukki. If your travel plans already specify an access point, first match it to the appropriate route destination, and only then compare the distances.

The reserve’s access points

Kanha Tiger Reserve has three access points: Khatia, Mukki, and Sarhi. Kisli is also listed as a destination alongside Khatia on the 155 km route. If you’re considering Kisli in your plans, bear in mind the distinction between the destinations named on the routes and the list of three access points.

From Nagpur via Chiraidongri

A 280 km road route runs from Nagpur via Seoni, Nainpur, Chiraidongri, Tatri, and Baihar to Mukki. A Kanha plan for the period 2022/23 to 2031/32 also lists a 255 km road route from Nagpur to Khatia and Kisli via Seoni, Nainpur, and Chiraidongri.

Both Nagpur routes run via Chiraidongri, but lead to different destinations: Mukki on the 280 km connection, and Khatia and Kisli on the 255 km connection. Both total distances refer to a route from Nagpur, not a distance from Chiraidongri. This makes it easier to interpret each route distance in relation to its stated starting point and destination. Road conditions can change; check the route before your trip.

Plan your hotel search and drive separately

This keeps two questions separate: Where do you want to look for a hotel, and what is the destination of your trip? When considering a specific hotel offer, check the details for your travel dates and the booking terms. If you’re comparing routes with different starting points, check which starting point and destination each distance covers.
